Rolling is when a round object (like a ball) turns over and over. Sliding is when a flat object (like a book) moves across a surface without turning.
Rolling friction is much smaller than sliding friction because, in rolling, there is no continuous rubbing between the two surfaces. When an object rolls (like a wheel or ball), only a small part of its surface is in contact with the ground at any moment. This contact area keeps shifting, so there is less heat generation and less energy loss.
In sliding motion, however, the same surface regions are dragged over one another — creating more microscopic interlocking and higher energy dissipation as heat.
Rolling resistance arises mainly due to deformation — not just friction.
When a wheel rolls, both the wheel and the surface slightly deform at the point of contact. The greater the deformation, the higher the rolling resistance.
