The JEE Advanced exam is the paramount gateway to the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) for undergraduate engineering and dual degree admissions. Only students who qualify JEE Main (by being in the top ~2,50,000 across categories) are eligible to sit for JEE Advanced. It is widely regarded as one of the toughest engineering entrance exams globally, known for its complexity, varied question formats, and conceptual depth.

While JEE Main opens the doors to NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and many other engineering colleges, JEE Advanced is the sole path to IITs. A candidate’s performance here determines not only admission to an IIT but also the branch and campus they may get.

JEE Advanced 2026 Syllabus: Key Topics & Weightage

A deep understanding of the JEE Advanced 2026 syllabus is the first step toward a focused preparation strategy. The syllabus, set by the organizing IIT, outlines all the important chapters from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics that you need to master for the exam.

JEE Main vs. Advanced Syllabus: What's the Difference?

Many students ask if the syllabus for JEE Main and Advanced is the same. Here's the clear answer:

The JEE Advanced syllabus is a superset of the JEE Main syllabus. It covers all the topics from Mains but in much greater depth. Additionally, it includes several exclusive, advanced topics that are not part of the JEE Main curriculum. Success in JEE Advanced requires not just knowledge of these topics, but also the ability to solve multi-concept, analytical problems.

FAQs on JEE Advanced 2026

What is a good rank in JEE Advanced for IIT Bombay CSE?

Securing a seat in Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay is extremely competitive. Based on recent trends, a rank within the top 60-70 in the General category is typically required. In 2025, the closing rank was 66.

How many students appear for JEE Advanced every year?

Out of the top 2,50,000 candidates eligible from JEE Main, a significant number appear for JEE Advanced. In 2025, 180,422 students appeared for the exam out of 187,223 who had registered.

Is NCERT enough to crack JEE Advanced?

NCERT textbooks are essential for building a strong foundation, but they are not sufficient on their own to crack JEE Advanced. The exam tests advanced concepts and complex problem-solving skills that require practice from higher-level reference books and extensive solving of previous year question papers.

Can I get into an NIT or IIIT with my JEE Advanced score?

No. Admission to NITs, IIITs, and other GFTIs is based exclusively on your JEE Main rank. Your JEE Advanced score and rank are only used for admission into the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Is the 75% criteria in Class 12 boards mandatory to appear for JEE Advanced?

No, the 75% (or top 20 percentile) rule is not required to be eligible to write the JEE Advanced exam. However, it is a mandatory condition for final admission into any of the IITs. You must satisfy this criterion to accept a seat, even if you have a qualifying rank.

What is the tie-breaking policy in JEE Advanced?

If two or more candidates score the same aggregate marks, the following tie-breaking policy is applied in order:

  • Candidates with higher positive marks will be awarded a higher rank.
  • If the tie persists, candidates with higher marks in Mathematics will get a higher rank.
  • If the tie still isn't resolved, candidates with higher marks in Physics will be given a higher rank.
  • If the tie continues, the candidates will be assigned the same rank.
