Good morning, everyone!
Today is a very special day for all of us—it’s Independence Day! On August 15th, we commemorate the moment in 1947 when India secured its independence from British rule. This day marks the culmination of a fierce struggle for freedom, and it reminds us of the sacrifices made by those who fought for our liberty. Today, we celebrate the hard-won freedom they achieved for us.
This day is Started by hoisting the National Flag and singing our National Anthem in our schools. The flag is a symbol of our country’s freedom and unity, and singing the anthem is a way to show our love for India.
Our freedom didn’t come easily. Many brave people, such as Bhagat Singh and Mahatma Gandhi, worked tirelessly and made many sacrifices. They believed in a free India and did everything they could to make it happen.
Mahatma Gandhi, in particular, taught us about the power of kindness and peace. He showed us that we can achieve great things without fighting and hurting others.
Today, we live in a country where we can go to school, play, and enjoy life without fear. We are lucky to have such a wonderful place to live, thanks to the efforts of those who fought for our freedom.

I, Promila Sharma – teacher of our higher secondary school, would like to take this opportunity to deliver a speech on Independence Day. I am sure you will agree to the fact that 15th August holds a special place in our hearts and therefore we all eagerly await the day. Don’t we? It’s a momentous day when we all pay homage to our great freedom fighters and remember the glory brought to our Nation through their sacrifices, struggle and brave front shown during the freedom struggle of our country. The Independence Day in India, therefore, marks not only the day of freedom of India from the British rule, but it also epitomizes the resilience and the power of our nation that has the ability to fight back and achieve its objective that it sets when all the people of our country come together.
And, in these 71 years, there has been no looking back as India has only been making a progress so much so that the day is not far behind when it will become a great superpower. We did not even complete four years of independence and our country got strengthened with the declaration of its becoming a Republic guided by the Constitution of India, which the entire world applauds even till today. We are a multicultural as well as multilingual nation and our strength lies in its unity amid diversity. From agriculture to technology, our country is ranked among the world leading countries and there is no question of retrieving our steps as here we are moving on to get bigger and better.
On the Independence Day, we not only recall the sacrifices made by our great freedom fighters, but also remember all our nation’s achievements which further encourage us to excel in different walks of life. To our delight, today we are counted among the leading five military powers across the globe and credit goes to our valiant soldiers who protect our borders day and night so that we can be at peace in our country. They not only protect us from every possible terrorist attack, but also remain available for rescue operations when any calamity hits the country.
Now, in the end let me just say that no Nation is perfect and every nation has its share of shortcomings. Also, it is a futile exercise to compare one nation to the other because every nation is unique in itself and possesses its own share of strength and weaknesses. On this Independence Day, let us take pledge to contribute towards our nation’s growth and development as best as we can and take it to great heights. However, we do not need any big initiatives to prove our love for our motherland because by contributing towards such initiatives as Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, and lending support to our domestic brands and using public transport, we can make our country a beautiful place to live in.

I have been serving as the principal of this school from past 7 years and in all these years our school has experienced a lot of ups and downs but despite all odds we stand here united with pride for the celebration of Independence Day. It therefore gives me immense pleasure to stand here in front of you all and address the Independence Day Speech. This year’s 15th August 2024 marks the 78th Independence Day and it shows we have come a long way since then. After all these years, we still cherish that momentous day when the great freedom fighters of our country won independence after years of struggle.
The hallmark of our identity as Indians is the line that sums up everything, i.e. “Unity in Diversity”. We live in a land of diverse culture, religion and language. There are 18 official languages and approximately 325 spoken languages. We live in harmony with people from different religious backgrounds and all the festivals are celebrated with a great zeal and show.
In fact, in our country people from all religious, ethnic and cultural backgrounds are given a warm welcome and hence the saying that goes – atithi devo bhava. While involving in a cross-cultural dialogue, we never forget our own Indian tradition and values and keep them intact. In these last 71 years, our country has emerged as one of the largest democracy in the world. So far, we as a nation have proved our mettle in the sphere of space technology, telecom industry as well as green revolution. At present, we are working towards becoming one of the strong IT hubs.
Even though many years have passed since we gained independence, please let us not forget the sacrifices of our leaders made to free their motherland. Besides, it is equally important to remember the foundation on which the Indian freedom struggle was based, i.e. non-violence movement. This concept has been taught to us by the great spiritual guru called Mahatma Gandhi or what we often address him as Bapu. The most significant aspect of our freedom is that it was won assertively and not through any aggressive practices. Today, we are still known as a nation which is an unruffled amalgamation of diverse values and cultures.
On the flip side, we have also suffered some serious setbacks, such as poverty, corruption and discrimination on various grounds, such as caste, class and gender which have created various fissures thereby preventing our country to be counted in the list of developed nations. However, we are also trying to get to the root cause and eradicate these social evils from our society. There are many self-help groups as well as NGOs running in different fields so as to root out these social evils and help the underprivileged section of our society to come to the fore and get the requisite exposure. This is a big step towards ensuring our nation’s all round development.
So let’s cheers for all the best things that have happened to our country while also concentrating on the areas where we are lacking as a nation and try to better ourselves.
