What is Addition?

Addition is the first and most important concept in mathematics. It simply means putting things together to find the total. When we add numbers, we combine them to know “how many in all.” Addition helps us in everyday life whether we count chocolates, money, pencils, or even friends in a game.

General Rules of Addition

Order Rule (Commutative Law)

Numbers can be added in any order, and the answer will be the same.
Example: 25 + 14 = 39 and 14 + 25 = 39

Grouping Rule (Associative Law)

If three numbers are added, grouping them differently will not change the sum.
Example: (12 + 8) + 10 = 30 and 12 + (8 + 10) = 30

Carrying Rule

If the sum of digits is more than 9, we carry over the extra value to the next place.
Example: 48 + 36 → Add ones → 8 + 6 = 14 → Write 4, carry 1 → Tens → 4 + 3 + 1 = 8 → Answer = 84

What is “Making Tens” or “Next Ten” in Class 1 Maths?

Sometimes students find addition tricky, so they are taught about “making tens” or “next ten”, and it made everything super easy!

What is Making Tens?

It means joining two numbers that add up to 10. For example:

7 + 3 = 10

4 + 6 = 10

9 + 1 = 10

What is Next Ten?

When we add numbers, sometimes we stop at the nearest ten number. For example:

8 + 2 = 10 (we reached the next ten)

13 + 7 = 20 (we reached the next ten)

Because once we know number pairs that make 10, adding bigger numbers becomes faster. For example:

To solve 18 + 2, I think of 8 + 2 = 10, so it becomes 20.

To solve 26 + 4, I know 6 + 4 = 10, so the answer is 30.

Learning making tens helps to do sums quickly in head, and it feels like solving a fun puzzle .

How to Help Kids with CBSE Class 1 Addition Worksheet?

Start with Small Numbers - Give simple sums like 2 + 3 or 4 + 5 before moving to bigger ones. It makes the child feel confident.

Use Real-Life Examples - Ask them to add apples, pencils, or toys. This connects the CBSE Class 1 addition worksheet with daily life.

Make it Interesting  - Turn practice into a game. For example, “Who can solve 5 sums in 2 minutes?” This makes worksheets more exciting.

Teach Carrying Step by Step - When moving to double-digit sums, explain tens and ones clearly. Show with bundles of sticks or blocks.

Encourage Self-Checking - After finishing, ask them to add again in reverse order (e.g., 7 + 3 or 3 + 7). This builds accuracy.

Praise Every Effort - Even if answers are wrong, appreciate the child. A little encouragement makes them love practicing worksheets.

Set a Regular Time - Just 15 minutes daily on the Class 1 addition worksheet with answers can build strong maths basics.
