Freeze, Float, and Slide in JoSAA 2026 are the three seat acceptance options that every candidate must select after each round of JoSAA seat allotment. Once JoSAA allots you a seat, you are required to choose one of these three options — Freeze, Float, or Slide — to indicate what you want to do with that seat in the remaining rounds. Not submitting your choice within the deadline leads to automatic cancellation of your allotted seat.
Understanding Freeze, Float, and Slide is one of the most critical tasks during JoSAA 2026 counselling. The wrong choice at the wrong round can cost you a seat you genuinely deserved. This article explains exactly what each option means, how they differ, when to use each one, and which option you should pick based on your situation.
In JoSAA 2026 — Freeze means accept your seat permanently and exit all future rounds. Float means keep your seat but compete for any better institute or branch in upcoming rounds. Slide means keep your seat but compete for a better branch at the same institute only. Float and Slide are NOT available in the last round (Round 6) — only Freeze or Withdraw apply there.
JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) conducts centralised seat allotment across 6 rounds for admissions to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. After each allotment round, every candidate who receives a seat must log in to josaa.nic.in and submit one of the following willingness options:
| Option | In One Line |
| Freeze | I am happy with this seat. Lock it. Don't include me in further rounds. |
| Float | I accept this seat, but please try to give me a higher preference in any upcoming round. |
| Slide | I accept this seat, but please try to give me a better branch at this same college in upcoming rounds. |
| Withdraw | I am cancelling this seat and exiting JoSAA entirely. |
All four options require the candidate to also upload documents and pay the seat acceptance fee within the same deadline. Selecting an option alone without completing these two steps is treated as an incomplete submission, and the seat is cancelled.
Freeze means you are fully satisfied with the seat allotted to you and do not want to be considered in any further rounds of JoSAA seat allotment. Your seat is locked permanently the moment you submit the Freeze option.
Choose Freeze when you are completely satisfied with your allotted college and branch, and you have no interest in upgrading. If your allotted seat is within your top 3 preferences, Freeze is generally the recommended choice — the risk of losing a good seat in hopes of a marginal improvement is rarely worth taking.
Example: You are allotted CSE at NIT Warangal, which was your second choice. You are happy with this. → Select Freeze.

Float means you accept your currently allotted seat but want JoSAA to consider you for any higher-preference option — a better institute, a better branch at any institute — in the remaining rounds.
If a higher-preference seat from your choice list opens up in subsequent rounds, JoSAA will automatically upgrade you to that seat and your previous seat will be cancelled. If no better option becomes available, your current allotment stays.

Choose Float when you believe a significantly better seat — at a different or better college, or a better branch anywhere — may realistically open up, and you are genuinely willing to move to it if it does.
Example: You are allotted Mechanical Engineering at NIT Trichy. Your higher preferences are CSE at NIT Trichy and CSE at NIT Surathkal. You are willing to move to either. → Select Float.
Most Common Mistake: Many students select Float when they only want a branch upgrade at the same college. Float can move you to an entirely different institute. For same-college branch upgrades, always use Slide instead.
Slide means you accept your currently allotted seat but want JoSAA to consider you for a higher-preference programme within the same institute only in the remaining rounds.

If a better branch at your current college opens up, JoSAA will upgrade you to that branch. If no upgrade is available within the same institute, your current allotment stays.
Choose Slide when you are happy with the college you have received but want a better branch there specifically. This is the most targeted upgrade option.
Example: You are allotted Electrical Engineering at IIIT Hyderabad. Your higher preference is ECE at IIIT Hyderabad (same college). You do not want to risk leaving IIIT Hyderabad. → Select Slide.

JoSAA 2026 is expected to conduct 6 rounds of seat allotment. Here is when each option is available:
| Round | Freeze | Float | Slide | Withdraw |
| Round 1 | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Round 2 | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Round 3 | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Round 4 | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Round 5 | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Round 6 (Last) | ✓ | ✗ | ✗ | ✓ |
After Round 6, CSAB Special Rounds are conducted for any vacant NIT+ seats. Separate registration is required for CSAB — it is free and open to all JEE Main qualifiers.
Withdraw is the fourth option available alongside Freeze, Float, and Slide. Selecting Withdraw means you are cancelling your allotted seat and exiting the JoSAA 2026 counselling process entirely. You will not be considered for any further rounds.
Choose Withdraw only if you have firmly decided to pursue a completely different admission path — such as BITSAT 2026, a state counselling, or a drop year — and you no longer need a JoSAA seat.
Selecting Freeze is permanent. You cannot switch to Float or Slide after freezing, in any round, under any circumstances.
In the final round of JoSAA, only Freeze and Withdraw are available. Any candidate still on Float or Slide after Round 5 will receive their best available upgrade in Round 6 and must then Freeze.
Choosing your option (Freeze/Float/Slide), uploading documents, and paying the seat acceptance fee must all be completed by the round deadline. Doing only one or two of these three is treated as an incomplete response and your seat is cancelled.
If JoSAA allots you the programme that was your first choice in your choice list, Slide and Float will not appear on the portal. Only Freeze is shown because there is no higher preference available to upgrade to.
The allowed direction for changing your option is: Float → Slide → Freeze. You can move in this direction across rounds. You cannot go from Freeze back to Float or Slide once Freeze is selected.
| Your Situation After Seat Allotment | Best Option |
| Allotted your first-choice programme | Freeze (only option shown) |
| Happy with seat, in your top 3 preferences | Freeze |
| Want a better institute or branch anywhere in India | Float |
| Happy with the college, want a better branch there | Slide |
| Considering a private college or different path | Withdraw |
| It is Round 6 (last round) | Freeze or Withdraw only |
If you received a seat in your top 3 choices, Freeze is almost always the right call. Use Float only when you are prepared to accept a specific, significantly better seat — not out of vague hope. And always use Slide (not Float) when your goal is a branch upgrade at the same college.
After each round of seat allotment, follow these steps on josaa.nic.in:
Set a reminder for every round deadline. JoSAA round deadlines are typically 24–48 hours after the allotment is published. Missing even one deadline cancels your seat permanently for that round.
Mistake 1 – Freezing Too Early in Round 1 or 2 Students often panic and freeze in early rounds, missing out on better seats that open up in Rounds 3–5. Before freezing, compare your current allotment against previous year's closing ranks for your higher preferences to assess the realistic probability of an upgrade.
Mistake 2 – Using Float When Slide Was the Right Call If you only want a better branch at your current college, using Float can accidentally move you to a completely different institute. Always use Slide for same-institute branch upgrades.
Mistake 3 – Not Completing All Three Steps Within the Deadline Selecting your option on the portal but forgetting to upload documents or pay the fee is treated as an incomplete submission. Your seat is cancelled. All three steps must be done together before the deadline.
Mistake 4 – Treating Float as a Guaranteed Upgrade Float only keeps you in contention — it does not guarantee a better seat. If your preferences are highly competitive (e.g., IIT Bombay CSE), the probability of an upgrade via Float may be very low. Evaluate realistically before floating.
Mistake 5 – Selecting Freeze and Expecting to Re-enter Many students freeze in one round and then regret it when a better seat opens in the next round. Once frozen, there is no going back. This is why choosing the right option in each round is critical.
| Option | Accept Seat? | Participate in Future Rounds? | Upgrade Scope | Available in Round 6? |
| Freeze | Yes | No | None | Yes |
| Float | Yes | Yes | Any institute or branch | No |
| Slide | Yes | Yes | Same institute, better branch | No |
| Withdraw | No | No | Exits JoSAA | Yes |
Freeze, Float, and Slide in JoSAA 2026 give candidates the flexibility to either secure a seat they are happy with or continue competing for upgrades in subsequent rounds. Freeze locks your seat with no risk. Float maximises upgrade potential but carries the risk of moving to a different institute. Slide targets a branch upgrade within the same college while retaining it as a fallback. Study your round-wise allotment carefully, compare against previous year JoSAA closing ranks, and choose the option that best fits your priorities — not the one that eliminates the most anxiety.

Freeze means you are satisfied with your allotted seat and want to lock it permanently. You will not be considered in any further rounds of JoSAA seat allotment after selecting Freeze.
Float means you accept your current seat but want to be considered for any higher-preference option — a better college or a better branch anywhere — in the remaining JoSAA rounds.
Slide means you accept your current seat but want a better branch at the same institute in the remaining rounds. You will not be moved to a different college if you select Slide.
Float can upgrade you to a better option at any institute. Slide only upgrades you within the same institute. Use Slide when you want to stay at your current college but prefer a different branch there.
No. Once you select Freeze, it cannot be changed to Float or Slide in any remaining round. Freeze is irreversible.
You can switch from Float → Slide or Float → Freeze in later rounds. You can also switch from Slide → Freeze. The restriction is only on upgrading — you cannot go from Freeze back to Float.
Float and Slide are not available in Round 6. Only Freeze and Withdraw are available in the final round of JoSAA 2026.
If you do not submit your option, upload documents, and pay the seat acceptance fee by the deadline, your provisionally allotted seat will be automatically cancelled. You will not be considered in any subsequent JoSAA rounds.
If you received your first-choice programme, only Freeze will be visible on the portal. Float and Slide are only available when your allotted seat is not your top preference.
JoSAA 2026 is expected to have 6 rounds of seat allotment, followed by CSAB Special Rounds for remaining vacant NIT+ seats.
