JoSAA Cutoff 2026 will be released in the form of opening and closing ranks after every round of JoSAA seat allotment. Candidates can check JoSAA 2026 cutoff ranks for IITs, IISc Bengaluru, NITs, IIEST Shibpur, IIITs and Other-GFTIs once the round-wise seat allocation results are announced.
For IIT and IISc admission, JoSAA cutoff is based on JEE Advanced 2026 rank. For NITs, IIEST Shibpur, IIITs and Other-GFTIs, JoSAA cutoff is based on JEE Main 2026 rank.
JoSAA 2026 Round 1 seat allocation is scheduled for 13 June 2026. The first round of JoSAA cutoff 2026 opening and closing ranks will be available after Round 1 seat allotment.
JoSAA 2026 registration and choice filling started on 2 June 2026 at 5:00 PM. Students can fill and lock their institute and branch choices before the deadline. The official JoSAA cutoff 2026 will start becoming available after the seat allotment rounds begin.
The expected release timeline for JoSAA 2026 cutoff is:
| JoSAA round | Seat allocation date | Cutoff |
| Round 1 | 13 June 2026 | Opening and closing ranks to be updated after allotment |
| Round 2 | 30 June 2026 | To be updated after Round 2 allotment |
| Round 3 | 6 July 2026 | To be updated after Round 3 allotment |
| Round 4 | 10 July 2026 | To be updated after Round 4 allotment |
| Round 5 | 16 July 2026 | Final round for IITs and IISc |
Students should not wait only for the final cutoff. Previous year opening and closing ranks should be used during choice filling to create a practical list of dream, realistic and safe options.

JoSAA cutoff is the minimum rank required to get admission into a particular institute and academic programme through JoSAA counselling.

However, JoSAA cutoff is not released as marks. It is released as opening rank and closing rank.
For example, if Computer Science Engineering at an institute has an opening rank of 500 and a closing rank of 2500 in a particular round, it means the first allotted candidate had rank 500 and the last allotted candidate had rank 2500 for that seat category, gender pool and quota.

JoSAA cutoff depends on many factors, including:
| Particular | Details |
| Exam/counselling | JoSAA Counselling 2026 |
| Cutoff format | Opening and closing ranks |
| Admission to | IITs, IISc, NITs, IIEST, IIITs and Other-GFTIs |
| IIT/IISc rank basis | JEE Advanced 2026 rank |
| NIT/IIIT/GFTI rank basis | JEE Main 2026 rank |
| Total participating institutes | 138 |
| Round 1 seat allotment | 13 June 2026 |
| Final round for IITs/IISc | Round 5 |
| Official cutoff release | After each round of seat allocation |
| Best use of cutoff | Choice filling, college prediction, branch comparison and admission planning |
Students often confuse opening rank and closing rank. Both are important.
| Term | Meaning | Why it matters |
| Opening rank | The best rank at which admission started for a programme in that round | Shows the top rank range for that branch and institute |
| Closing rank | The last rank at which a seat was allotted for a programme in that round | Shows the maximum rank up to which admission was possible |
| OR-CR | Opening Rank and Closing Rank | Used to estimate admission chances |
The closing rank is more useful for students because it tells the last rank that got admission in that round.
Example:

If the closing rank for a branch is 8000 and your rank is 7500, you may have a chance based on previous trends. If your rank is 15000, the same branch may be difficult unless cutoff trends change significantly.
JoSAA does not announce a fixed cutoff before counselling. The cutoff is created automatically through the seat allotment process.
A seat is allotted based on:
This means JoSAA cutoff is not the same as JEE Main qualifying cutoff or JEE Advanced qualifying marks.
| Point | JoSAA cutoff | JEE Main cutoff |
| Format | Opening and closing ranks | Percentile or qualifying score |
| Purpose | Admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs | Eligibility for JEE Advanced or qualification benchmark |
| Released by | JoSAA | NTA |
| Used for | Seat allocation | Exam qualification |
| Depends on | Rank, choices, seats, category, quota | Exam difficulty and candidate performance |

JoSAA cutoff is released after each seat allocation round. Students should track the round-wise opening and closing ranks carefully because the cutoff can change after every round.
| Round | Seat allocation date | What students should check |
| Round 1 | 13 June 2026 | First official cutoff trend |
| Round 2 | 30 June 2026 | Movement after upgrades and acceptance |
| Round 3 | 6 July 2026 | Better estimate of stable branches |
| Round 4 | 10 July 2026 | Important before final IIT/IISc round |
| Round 5 | 16 July 2026 | Final IIT/IISc cutoff trend |
Important: Round 5 is the final round for IITs and IISc. For the NIT+ system, students should also follow CSAB updates after JoSAA.
JoSAA cutoff for IITs is based on JEE Advanced 2026 ranks. Students who qualify JEE Advanced and participate in JoSAA counselling can fill IIT choices.
The IIT cutoff is usually most competitive for branches like:
| Round | IIT cutoff status |
| Round 1 | To be updated after 13 June 2026 |
| Round 2 | To be updated after 30 June 2026 |
| Round 3 | To be updated after 6 July 2026 |
| Round 4 | To be updated after 10 July 2026 |
| Round 5 | To be updated after 16 July 2026 |
Students should also check institute-wise and branch-wise IIT cutoffs:
JoSAA cutoff for NITs is based on JEE Main 2026 ranks. NIT cutoff is released separately for Home State quota and Other State quota wherever applicable.
For NIT admission, students must pay close attention to:
Popular NIT branches include:
| Round | NIT cutoff status |
| Round 1 | To be updated after 13 June 2026 |
| Round 2 | To be updated after 30 June 2026 |
| Round 3 | To be updated after 6 July 2026 |
| Round 4 | To be updated after 10 July 2026 |
| Round 5 | To be updated after 16 July 2026 |

JoSAA cutoff for IIITs is based on JEE Main 2026 ranks. IIITs are popular among students interested in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.
IIIT cutoff can be competitive because many students prefer IIITs for tech-focused branches.
Popular IIIT cutoff searches include:
Note: Not every IIIT participates in JoSAA in the same way. Students should check the official participating institute list and admission process for the specific institute.
| Round | IIIT cutoff status |
| Round 1 | To be updated after 13 June 2026 |
| Round 2 | To be updated after 30 June 2026 |
| Round 3 | To be updated after 6 July 2026 |
| Round 4 | To be updated after 10 July 2026 |
| Round 5 | To be updated after 16 July 2026 |
Other-GFTIs are also part of the JoSAA counselling system. These institutes can be good options for students who do not get their preferred IIT, NIT or IIIT branch.
GFTI cutoff is based on JEE Main rank. Students should include suitable GFTIs in their choice list as backup options, especially if their rank is not enough for top NITs or IIITs.
| Round | GFTI cutoff status |
| Round 1 | To be updated after 13 June 2026 |
| Round 2 | To be updated after 30 June 2026 |
| Round 3 | To be updated after 6 July 2026 |
| Round 4 | To be updated after 10 July 2026 |
| Round 5 | To be updated after 16 July 2026 |
JoSAA cutoff is released separately for different seat categories.
Common seat categories include:
Students must check the cutoff for their correct category. A General category rank and OBC-NCL category rank are not directly comparable.
| Seat type | Rank shown in JoSAA cutoff |
| OPEN seats | Common Rank List rank |
| EWS seats | EWS category rank |
| OBC-NCL seats | OBC-NCL category rank |
| SC seats | SC category rank |
| ST seats | ST category rank |
| PwD seats | PwD rank within the respective category |
If a rank has the suffix “P,” it indicates the rank is from the Preparatory Rank List.
JoSAA opening and closing ranks are also shown by gender pool. Students may see separate cutoffs for:
Female-only seats can sometimes have different closing ranks compared to gender-neutral seats. Students should check the correct gender pool while comparing cutoffs.
Do not use only one cutoff table blindly. Always check:
For NITs and some other institutes, JoSAA cutoff can differ based on quota.
Common quota types include:
Home State quota can play a major role in NIT admissions. A student may have a better chance at their home-state NIT compared to another state NIT, depending on rank and branch.
JoSAA 2026 cutoff will be released only after seat allotment rounds. Until then, students should use previous year opening and closing ranks to estimate admission chances.
Previous year cutoffs help students understand:
However, previous year cutoff should not be treated as a guarantee. Cutoffs can change due to seat availability, new programmes, branch demand, candidate preferences and category-wise movement.
Students can check JoSAA cutoff 2026 through the official opening and closing rank portal after the round-wise cutoffs are released.
Follow these steps:
When checking JoSAA cutoff, students should always match the correct round, category, quota and gender pool.
JoSAA cutoff is most useful when it is used before choice locking. Students should not fill choices randomly.
Use this method:
These are colleges and branches where the previous year closing rank is better than your rank, but not impossible.
Example: If your rank is 8500 and a branch closed around 7000 last year, it can be added as a dream option.
These are choices where your rank is close to the previous year closing rank.
Example: If your rank is 8500 and a branch closed between 8200 and 9500 last year, it is realistic.
These are choices where your rank is comfortably better than the previous year closing rank.
Example: If your rank is 8500 and a branch closed around 13000 last year, it can be a safer option.
Do not arrange choices only by cutoff. Arrange them by what you actually want.
The correct order should consider:
Branch demand affects JoSAA cutoff every year. Some branches usually close at better ranks because more students prefer them.
A lower closing rank does not always mean a branch is bad. Students should consider long-term interest, college reputation, placement pattern and higher-study options.
Many students get confused between a better college with a less preferred branch and a preferred branch at a lower-ranked college.
There is no one answer for everyone.
Choose a better college if:
Choose a better branch if:
After JoSAA rounds, CSAB Special Rounds are conducted mainly for vacant seats in the NIT+ system. IIT seats are not included in CSAB Special Rounds.
Students who do not get a satisfactory seat in JoSAA or want to try for vacant NIT, IIIT or GFTI seats should track CSAB updates after JoSAA.
JoSAA cutoff and CSAB cutoff can differ because CSAB happens after JoSAA and depends on vacant seats.
Avoid these mistakes while using JoSAA cutoff:
Use this simple method to estimate college chances:
| Your rank vs previous year closing rank | Admission chance |
| Your rank is much better than closing rank | High chance |
| Your rank is close to closing rank | Moderate chance |
| Your rank is slightly worse than closing rank | Possible in later rounds or CSAB |
| Your rank is far worse than closing rank | Low chance |
Example:
If a branch closed at 12000 last year and your rank is 11500, it may be a realistic option.
If the same branch closed at 12000 and your rank is 25000, it is unlikely unless there is major cutoff movement.
JoSAA Cutoff 2026 is one of the most important tools for making the right college and branch decision. Do not use cutoff ranks only to see whether you are “eligible.” Use them to build a complete choice list with dream, realistic and safe options.
Before locking your JoSAA choices, check your rank against previous year opening and closing ranks, category, quota, gender pool, branch preference and seat availability.
If your rank is borderline, expert guidance can help you avoid common mistakes and improve your chances of getting the best possible college and branch through JoSAA.

The JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) cutoff refers to the minimum rank/score required in JEE Main/JEE Advanced for admission to undergraduate engineering programs (like B.Tech/B.Arch) in participating institutes such as IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other GFTIs.
It determines eligibility for seat allocation. If your JEE rank is above (better than) the cutoff for a particular institute and program, you can get a seat there during counselling.
Cutoffs are typically published after each round of seat allocation during the JoSAA counselling process, starting in the first round and updating through subsequent rounds.
Several key things affect it:
Number of applicants
Difficulty level of JEE Main/Advanced
Number of available seats
Previous year trends
Category-wise reservation policies
No. Cutoffs are category-wise (General, OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, ST, PwD, etc.) to ensure fair allocation based on reservation rules.
After release, you can:

Look for the Cutoff/Seat Allotment result links
Download available PDFs for round-wise and program-wise cutoffs
Opening rank: Highest rank at which the first seat was allotted.
Closing rank: Lowest rank at which a seat was allotted for that round.
These together define the rank range for admissions in a particular program/institute.
Yes. Cutoffs are usually dynamic and may go up or down across rounds based on seat acceptance, withdrawals, and choices filled by other candidates.
Not always. For NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, qualifying the JEE Main cutoff is sufficient. For IITs, you must first qualify JEE Advanced.
Previous cutoffs are available on the official JoSAA site and through coaching/education portals — useful for trend analysis and target setting.
