Why IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi remain top picks in JEE Advanced 2025 admissions?

For JEE Advanced 2025 toppers, IIT Bombay has once again emerged as the most preferred institute, closely followed by IIT Delhi. Despite being ranked the top engineering college by NIRF, IIT Madras remains less popular among the highest rankers.

According to the latest JoSAA counselling data, 73 of the top 100 rankers chose IIT Bombay in 2025, showing a steady rise from 72 in 2024 and 67 in 2023. Meanwhile, IIT Delhi attracted 19 of the top 100 rankers this year, slightly lower than previous years but still securing its position as the second-most preferred IIT.

IIT Madras, despite its top NIRF ranking, received six students from the top 100, marking its highest intake in five years.

Year-wise Preferences of Top 100 Rankers

The data highlights IIT Bombay’s growing dominance, with its share among the top 100 rankers steadily increasing from 58 in 2020 to over 70 in 2024 and 2025.

When considering the broader top 5000 rankers:

• IIT Bombay leads with 755 admissions
• IIT Delhi follows with 577
• IIT Madras has 478

Other IITs also attract significant numbers:

• IIT Kharagpur: 517 students
• IIT Kanpur: 448 students
• IIT Roorkee: 429 students
• IIT Hyderabad: 222 students

Among newer IITs, IIT Guwahati (305), IIT BHU Varanasi (258), and IIT Indore (109) had notable representation.

Smaller IITs, however, saw limited intake from top rankers. For example:

• IIT Bhubaneswar: 43
• IIT Jodhpur: 63
• IIT Ropar: 120
• IIT Jammu: 4, IIT Goa: 3, IIT Palakkad: 1, IIT Dharwad: 1, IIT Bhilai: 2

This data clearly shows the strong preference for older IITs, particularly IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi, while smaller and newer campuses continue to attract fewer top-ranking students.
