What is Articles?

Articles are little words, but they are very useful in making sentences correct.
Articles are words that come before nouns to show whether the noun is specific or general. Their are three articles in English grammar a, an, and the.

For example:

• I saw a butterfly in my garden.
• I ate an Orange that was given by my mother.
• The caterpillar is sleeping on the sofa.

Types of Articles

There are mainly two types of articles that we learn in English grammar:

1. Indefinite Articles (a, an)

These are used when we talk about something general or not specific.

‘A’ is used before words that begin with a consonant sound.

Example: a dog, a pen, a teacher

‘An’ is used before words that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u) or a silent ‘h’.

Example: an apple, an umbrella, an hour

So, use while talking something in general, and an when the next word starts with a vowel sound.

2. Definite Article (the)

This article is used when we talk about something specific or already known to the listener.

Example: the sun, the Taj Mahal, the Ganga, the book on the table

Use when talk about a particular person, place, or thing that both the speaker and listener know about.
