Modals are auxiliary verbs which convey abilities, possibilities, permissions, requests, obligations or advice. Modals that are common are can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will and would.
Modals are followed by the base form of the main verb without "to." For example, "She can swim," not "She can swims.
Typical questions include filling in blanks with correct modals, correcting modal errors, matching modals to their functions, and rewriting sentences using modals.
Most modals form negatives by adding "not" after them, for example, "cannot" (can't), "should not" (shouldn't), "must not" (mustn't).
