IIT Madras is ranked as the top IIT in India by NIRF — for the tenth consecutive year in 2025. For most JEE Advanced qualifiers, it represents either the first choice or a very strong alternative to IIT Bombay. Located in Chennai, IIT Madras has 16 departments, 14 research centres, and a startup ecosystem that has produced over 250 companies.
Before diving into the data, here is what matters most:
This guide covers every aspect of IIT Madras BTech admission for 2026 — from JEE Advanced eligibility and cutoff trends to the complete fee structure with income slabs, branch-wise placement data, and practical JoSAA counselling guidance.
Getting into IIT Madras follows a three-stage process:
Stage 1 — JEE Main: Qualify to be among the top 2,50,000 candidates across all categories. IIT Madras admission is based exclusively on JEE Advanced AIR — not JEE Main percentile.
Stage 2 — JEE Advanced 2026: Appear in both Paper 1 and Paper 2 on May 17, 2026. Both papers are compulsory. Absence in either paper means no rank list entry.
Stage 3 — JoSAA Counselling: Register on josaa.nic.in after result declaration (June 1, 2026). Fill branch and institute preferences. Get seat allotted across 6 rounds.
As per IIT Madras BTech eligibility criteria, candidates must fulfil the following conditions: complete Class 12 from a recognised board, score at least 75% aggregate marks (65% for SC/ST) in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, and qualify JEE Advanced. Admission is offered based on the candidate's All India Rank in JEE Advanced along with category-wise reservation rules.

| Eligibility Parameter | Requirement |
| Qualifying Exam | JEE Advanced 2026 (both papers mandatory) |
| Class 12 Marks (General / OBC / EWS) | Minimum 75% aggregate |
| Class 12 Marks (SC / ST / PwD) | Minimum 65% aggregate |
| Alternative | Top 20 percentile in respective board exam |
| Age Limit (General) | Born on or after October 1, 2001 |
| Age Limit (SC / ST / PwD) | Born on or after October 1, 1996 |
| Maximum Attempts | 2 attempts in 2 consecutive years |
| Previous IIT Admission | Candidates previously admitted to an IIT are ineligible |
| Event | Date |
| JEE Advanced 2026 Exam | May 17, 2026 |
| Official Response Sheet | May 21, 2026 |
| Provisional Answer Key | May 25, 2026 |
| Final Answer Key + Result | June 1, 2026 (10 AM IST) |
| JoSAA 2026 Registration | ~June 2–3, 2026 |
| JoSAA Round 1 Allotment | ~June 13–14, 2026 |
| JoSAA Round 6 (Final) | ~July 2026 |
The cutoff at IIT Madras represents the Round 6 closing rank — the last AIR at which a seat was allotted after all six JoSAA rounds completed. This is the most relevant benchmark for 2026 planning.
For CSE (General), the opening and closing ranks in Round 1 were 79 and 171 respectively, as per JoSAA 2025.

| Metallurgical & Materials Engineering | 6,200 | 6,890 | Moderate |
| Engineering Physics | 1,800 | 2,050 | High |
| Ocean Engineering | 6,500 | 7,100 | Moderate |
| Biological Sciences (BS) | 7,200 | 7,432 | Lower Competition |
In 2025, the most competitive programme was B.Tech + M.Tech Aerospace Engineering with a closing rank of 16 for the General category, while BS Biological Sciences had the lowest cutoff at 9,555 (BS programmes use a different ranking pool). The Aerospace anomaly is attributed to dual-degree structure and limited seats — not a repeatable pattern.
| Branch | Female Closing Rank (R6) |
| Computer Science & Engineering | 490 |
| Artificial Intelligence | 620 |
| Electrical Engineering | 1,950 |
| Mechanical Engineering | 4,800 |
| Chemical Engineering | 7,200 |
| Civil Engineering | 9,500 |
Female candidates access supernumerary seats through a separate female-only pool. The closing ranks are significantly more relaxed — a female student at AIR 450 can secure CSE at IIT Madras, a seat requiring AIR 171 for male candidates.
The General category closing rank for CSE at IIT Madras was AIR 107 in Round 1 of JoSAA 2025, closing at AIR 171 by Round 6. For OBC-NCL it was 225, SC was 540, and ST was 1,310. Wait — the conflicting data in search results (107 vs 171 for General) reflects Round 1 vs Round 6. Round 6 is the definitive figure.
| Category | Closing Rank (R6) | Seat Type |
| General (Gender-Neutral) | 171 | CRL rank |
| General (Female-only) | 490 | CRL rank |
| OBC-NCL (Gender-Neutral) | 87 | Category rank |

| SC (Gender-Neutral) | 43 | SC category rank |
| SC (Female-only) | 85 | SC category rank |
| ST (Gender-Neutral) | 28 | ST category rank |
IIT Madras CSE is consistently among the top 3 most competitive seats in India. A student with SC category rank 43 secures a seat that requires General AIR 171 — illustrating the significant advantage of reserved category ranks.

Understanding trend direction is more valuable than any single year's data for 2026 planning.
| Branch | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 (Expected) |
| CSE | 135 | 128 | 152 | 128 | 171 | 150–185 |
| AI (B.Tech + M.Tech) | — | 265 | 278 | 258 | 292 | 270–310 |
| Electrical Engineering | 720 | 685 | 780 | 795 | 849 | 800–890 |
| Engineering Design | 980 | 920 | 1,050 | 1,120 | 1,180 | 1,100–1,250 |
| Mechanical Engineering | 2,050 | 1,980 | 2,180 | 2,290 | 2,359 | 2,200–2,500 |
| Chemical Engineering | 3,800 | 3,650 | 3,980 | 4,100 | 4,200 | 4,000–4,400 |
| Civil Engineering | 5,100 | 4,950 | 5,280 | 5,480 | 5,629 | 5,400–5,800 |
Three critical observations:
First, IIT Madras CSE is showing a loosening trend — from 128 in 2022 to 171 in 2025. This is not because IIT Madras is less competitive — it reflects more top rankers choosing IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi CSE before reaching IIT Madras. For students at AIR 130–170, IIT Madras CSE is increasingly accessible.
Second, AI (B.Tech + M.Tech) at IIT Madras is tightening rapidly. A dual-degree programme that combines CS fundamentals with AI specialisation, it has moved from 265 to 292 in three years. This reflects growing awareness of AI career pathways and the premium placed on integrated degrees.
Third, Electrical Engineering shows consistent tightening — from 720 in 2021 to 849 in 2025. As semiconductor, VLSI, and embedded systems careers grow, EE demand at top IITs is rising.
JEE Advanced 2026 Paper 1 was harder than 2025, particularly in Mathematics. A harder paper tends to relax cutoffs modestly in mid-range branches. For CSE and AI, demand concentration at the top makes them largely insensitive to paper difficulty shifts.
| Branch | Expected Closing Rank 2026 (General) | Direction |
| CSE | 150–185 | Stable to slight relaxation |
| AI (B.Tech + M.Tech) | 270–310 | Tightening trend continues |
| Electrical Engineering | 800–890 | Slight tightening |
| Engineering Design | 1,100–1,250 | Stable |
| Engineering Physics | 1,950–2,150 | Stable |
| Mechanical Engineering | 2,200–2,500 | Stable |
| Chemical Engineering | 4,000–4,400 | Stable |
| Civil Engineering | 5,400–5,800 | Stable |
For students in the AIR 100–200 range, the choice between these three institutes for CSE is a genuine dilemma.
| IIT | CSE Closing Rank 2025 | CSE Closing Rank 2024 | Direction |
| IIT Bombay | 66 | 68 | Tightening |
| IIT Delhi | 126 | 116 | Slight relaxation |
| IIT Madras | 171 | 128 | Loosening |
| IIT Kanpur | 155 | 162 | Tightening |
| IIT Kharagpur | 225 | 238 | Tightening |
| IIT Roorkee | 282 | 295 | Tightening |
In 2025, IIT Madras CSE (171) was actually less competitive than IIT Kanpur CSE (155) — a reversal from earlier years. A student at AIR 160 who fills preferences correctly can access IIT Kanpur or IIT Delhi CSE before reaching IIT Madras in the JoSAA allotment sequence.
Practical guidance: Students targeting IIT Madras CSE should list it alongside IIT Kanpur CSE and IIT Delhi CSE in their preference order — not below other IIT Madras branches.
| Target Branch | Required AIR (General) | Approx. JEE Advanced Marks Needed |
| CSE | Under 171 | 265+ marks out of 360 |
| AI (B.Tech + M.Tech) | Under 292 | 255+ marks |
| Electrical Engineering | Under 849 | 235+ marks |
| Engineering Design | Under 1,180 | 225+ marks |
| Engineering Physics | Under 2,050 | 210+ marks |
| Mechanical Engineering | Under 2,359 | 205+ marks |
| Chemical Engineering | Under 4,200 | 165+ marks |
| Civil Engineering | Under 5,629 | 148+ marks |
A safe rank builds a 10–15% buffer below historical closing rank to account for year-to-year fluctuation.
| Branch | Safe Rank (General) | Safe Rank (OBC-NCL) | Safe Rank (SC) |
| CSE | Under 150 | Under 75 | Under 38 |
| AI (B.Tech + M.Tech) | Under 260 | Under 110 | Under 50 |
| Electrical Engineering | Under 800 | Under 290 | Under 115 |
| Engineering Design | Under 1,050 | Under 415 | Under 165 |
| Mechanical Engineering | Under 2,150 | Under 840 | Under 335 |
| Chemical Engineering | Under 3,850 | Under 1,500 | Under 600 |
| Civil Engineering | Under 5,200 | Under 2,000 | Under 800 |
IIT Madras education is one of the most affordable at this quality level globally. The fee structure is progressive — students from lower-income families pay significantly less, and SC/ST/PwD students pay no tuition.
For the 2025–26 academic year, tuition fee in IIT BTech programmes depends on family income and category: General/OBC-NCL/EWS with annual income above ₹5 lakh pay ₹1,00,000 per semester; with income between ₹1–5 lakh pay approximately ₹33,333 per semester (two-thirds waiver); below ₹1 lakh pay ₹0 (full remission). This is the most important decision most students and parents face. The honest, data-backed answer: for most students, IIT Madras Civil Engineering beats CSE at a newer IIT on nearly every metric that matters over a 10-year career horizon.
Here is why:
Research infrastructure: IIT Madras has 14 active research centres including IITM Research Park — India's largest university research park. Students from every department access this.
Alumni network: Over 50,000 alumni across industry, academia, and government. The IIT Madras alumni network actively recruits from campus regardless of branch.
Brand recognition: The NIRF #1 ranking translates directly to job interviews, MBA applications, and international PhD admissions — for all branches.
Placement floor: Even Civil Engineering at IIT Madras has a median package of ₹12–15 LPA — higher than CSE at most tier-3 engineering colleges.
Branch switching: IIT Madras allows branch change after the first year based on academic performance. A Civil Engineering student in the top 5% of the batch can switch to CSE.
The only genuine exception: students with a very specific industry target (e.g., product management at a specific tech company) where CSE at IIT Madras is a near-requirement. For everyone else, IIT Madras in any branch is a strong long-term decision.
Students aiming for IIT Madras need to crack JEE Advanced — and JEE Advanced builds directly on JEE Main preparation.

IIT Madras aspirants should focus preparation on retained high-weightage topics. The deleted topics above are not tested in JEE Main 2026 but some concepts (like thermodynamics in Chemistry) remain in JEE Advanced syllabus — verify topic by topic against the official JEE Advanced 2026 syllabus from jeeadv.ac.in.
Scenario 1 — Targeting IIT Madras CSE (AIR 130–170): List IIT Madras CSE first. Add IIT Kanpur CSE (155) and IIT Delhi CSE (126) as alternatives — both have similar or better cutoffs. Include IIT Madras AI (292) as a comfortable backup within IIT Madras. Do not restrict to CSE only — missing by 10 ranks could mean a significant downgrade.
Scenario 2 — Targeting IIT Madras EE (AIR 700–850): List IIT Madras EE as the primary choice. Add IIT Roorkee CSE (282) and IIT Kanpur EE as alternatives — both are within reach at this rank. IIT Madras Engineering Design (1,180) is a comfortable backup within the same institute.
Scenario 3 — AIR 2,000–2,500 (General): IIT Madras Mechanical (2,359) is the primary IIT Madras target. IIT Roorkee EE and IIT Kanpur Mechanical are strong alternatives. IIT Madras Chemical Engineering (4,200) is a very safe IIT Madras backup.
Scenario 4 — OBC-NCL category rank 100–200: CSE (87) and AI (128) at IIT Madras are both realistic options. EE (320) is very comfortable. This is a strong position — comparable to General AIR 300–500.

Based on 2025 data and trend analysis, a rank under AIR 150–185 (General category) is needed for CSE at IIT Madras. The 2025 Round 6 closing rank was 171 (General, Gender-Neutral). For OBC-NCL, the closing category rank needed is approximately 75–90.
IIT Bombay CSE is harder — it closed at AIR 66 vs IIT Madras CSE at AIR 171 in 2025. IIT Bombay has a slightly tighter CSE cutoff (AIR 66 vs 107 in Round 1), but IIT Madras has tighter cutoffs for Mechanical Engineering (1,987 vs 2,567).
The total fees for BTech at IIT over 4 years, including hostel and mess, ranges between ₹8–11 lakh for General category students. For students with tuition waivers, the total cost can reduce to ₹3.5–4.5 lakh. For SC/ST students, only living expenses apply — approximately ₹5.4–5.8 lakh for 4 years.
BTech CS average and median package recorded in 2025 was ₹53.2 LPA and ₹46 LPA. The highest package in 2025 was ₹4.3 crore per annum from Jane Street for a CSE student.
At AIR 1,000 (General), the options at IIT Madras are: Engineering Design (closing 1,180) — borderline; Mechanical (2,359) — comfortable; Chemical, Civil — very comfortable. CSE (171), AI (292), and EE (849) are out of reach at this rank for General category.
At AIR 5,000 (General), Chemical Engineering (4,200) is slightly above the closing rank — borderline to not accessible. Civil Engineering (5,629) is within range. All other main branches are out of reach. Consider IIT Guwahati CSE or IIT BHU Varanasi as strong alternatives at this rank.
General/OBC-NCL/EWS students with family income below ₹1 lakh pay ₹0 tuition per semester. EWS students with income between ₹1–5 lakh get a two-thirds tuition waiver. The EWS certificate must be valid for financial year 2025–26 for JoSAA 2026.
IIT Madras allows branch change after completing the first year, based on academic performance in the first two semesters. Students who rank in the top 5–10% of their batch and meet the target branch's grade requirements can apply. Competition for CSE branch change is intense — a CGPA above 9.5 is typically needed.
IIT Madras offers BS programmes in several subjects (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Economics) that have separate admission criteria. The institute also has reserved supernumerary seats under the Science Olympiad Excellence category from 2025–26, open to Olympiad achievers without JEE Advanced scores.
CSE leads with a median of ₹46 LPA and average of ₹53.2 LPA in 2025. AI (B.Tech + M.Tech dual degree) is expected to be close. EE follows at ₹22.5 LPA median. Even branches like Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering record median packages of ₹15–17 LPA — strong relative to market averages.
IIT Madras is ranked as NIRF #1 Engineering Institute in India — consistently for a decade. In international rankings, it features among the top 250–300 globally in engineering. This ranking directly translates to recruiter preference, research funding, and alumni network strength across all departments.
