Answer: The young seagull was scared to fly because it was his first attempt. Just like him, many young birds feel nervous before taking their first flight because it is something new and difficult for them. Similarly, human babies also find it tough to take their first steps. They often fall and struggle before they finally learn to walk properly.

Q2. “The sight of the food maddened him.” What does this mean? What forced the young seagull to fly?

Answer: The young seagull was very hungry but too scared to fly. His family tried everything to motivate him. Finally, his mother used his hunger to encourage him. She flew towards him with a piece of fish but stopped just out of his reach. Unable to control his hunger, he jumped forward to grab the food and ended up flying for the first time.

Q3. “They were beckoning to him, calling shrilly.” Why did the seagull’s parents push him to fly?

Answer: The young seagull's parents wanted him to overcome his fear and learn how to fly. Flying was essential for his survival. They encouraged him by calling out, threatening to leave him hungry, and even mocking him. Their aim was to make him confident and independent.

Q4. Have you had a similar experience where your parents motivated you to try something new?

Answer: Yes, when I was young, I wanted to learn skating. My parents bought me skates, but I fell many times and became scared. I even refused to try again. After a few years, I gave it another try, still feeling nervous. I fell again but kept practicing. Slowly, I learned to skate and started enjoying it. My parents' support helped me overcome my fear.

Q5. In the case of birds, flying seems natural. In your example, was success certain, or was trying more important than winning?

Answer: Success was not guaranteed when I tried to skate. Seeing other kids skate perfectly made me feel I had to succeed immediately. But I learned that trying, even after failing, was important. Eventually, after many attempts, I succeeded, and it felt very satisfying.

The Black Aeroplane by Frederick Forsyth

Q1. “I’ll take the risk.” What was the risk and why did the narrator take it?

Answer: The pilot decided to fly through a dangerous storm. Even though dark clouds covered the sky, he chose to continue because he was eager to reach England to celebrate Christmas with his family.

Q2. What happened when the pilot entered the storm?

Answer: Inside the storm, everything went dark. His compass and radio stopped working, making him feel lost and scared. Just when he thought it was over, another mysterious black aeroplane appeared and guided him safely out of the storm. He was thankful for the help and landed safely with very little fuel left.

Q3. Why did the narrator say, “I landed and was not sorry to walk away from the old Dakota…”?

Answer: Although he loved flying his Dakota plane, the storm experience was so terrifying that he was simply relieved to land safely and step away from the plane without any harm.

Q4. Why did the woman at the control centre look at him strangely?

Answer: After landing, the pilot asked about the other plane that guided him. The woman was surprised because no other plane was visible on the radar. She couldn’t believe his story as there was no record of any such aircraft.

Q5. Who do you think helped the narrator? Discuss and give reasons.

Answer: It seems that the mysterious plane could have been a creation of the pilot's imagination, caused by panic and fear. Since the control room saw no other plane, it might have been his subconscious mind helping him find a way out of the storm.
