A. Two major cities in control of the Chahamanas were Delhi and Ajmer.

5. How did the Rashtrakutas become powerful?

A. The Rashtrakutas in the Deccan were subordinate to the Chalukyas of Karnataka. It was during the mid-8th century when Dantidurga, a Rashtrakuta chief, overthrew his Chalukya overlord and performed a ritual called ‘Hiranya-garbha’ with the help of Brahmanas. During this period, it was thought that the sacrificer would be reborn as a Kshatriya, even if he was not one by birth. Also, they fought against the dynasties of Gurjara Pratihara and Palas. Thus, successfully establishing kingdoms in Karnataka and Rajasthan respectively.

6. What did the new dynasties do to gain acceptance?

A. To gain acceptance, the new dynasties took on new titles, performed religious rituals which would make them part of the Kshatriyas, and engaged in warfare to assert their power and carve kingdoms for themselves. These rulers also tried to demonstrate their power by building large temples.

7. What kind of irrigation works were developed in the Tamil region?

A. The irrigation works developed in the Tamil region were “wells, huge tanks to collect rainwater and river channels. To regulate water in the tank and in the channel “Sluice gates” were built.

A. i) A Chola temple was not only a place of worship but also the hub of economic, social, and cultural life.

ii)Thus apart from the priests we find a number of people, who engaged in various activities, were associated with a Chola

iii)They were “garland makers, cooks, sweepers, musicians, dancers, craftspeople," etc.

iv) These temples were also the center of crafts making of bronze images of deities and devotees.

10. Contrast the “elections” in Uttaramerur with present-day panchayat elections.

 A. The system of election in Uttaramerur was quite different from that of the present-day panchayat

In the Uttaramerur election, the names of the persons eligible to be members of the committees were written on small tickets of palm leaves. The tickets were put into an earthenware pot. Thereafter a young boy was asked to take out the tickets, one by one for each committee.

But the present-day panchayat members are elected through a general election. The names of the total members are printed with a symbol allotted to them on a paper called ballot paper. 

The voter puts a stamp over their choice and drops it in a ballot box. Votes are counted and the winners' name is declared by the Returning Officer. Every procedure is organized by a statutory body.
