Admission to BTech at any of the 23 IITs follows a fixed process with no exceptions.
Step 1 — Clear JEE Main 2026: Appear in JEE Main Session 1 (January) or Session 2 (April). Only the top 2.5 lakh candidates in JEE Main qualify for JEE Advanced. Your JEE Main score is not used for IIT admission directly — it is only the qualifying gate.
Step 2 — Clear JEE Advanced 2026: JEE Advanced 2026 is scheduled for May 17, 2026. It consists of two papers of 3 hours each. JEE Advanced is conducted by IIT Roorkee in 2026. Only students who cleared JEE Main and rank within the top 2.5 lakh are eligible to register.
Step 3 — Register for JoSAA Counselling JoSAA 2026 counselling is expected to begin in June 2026 after JEE Advanced results. Register at josaa.nic.in, fill in your IIT and branch preferences, lock your choices, and participate in seat allotment rounds.
Step 4 — Accept Seat and Pay Fees Once a seat is allotted, pay the seat acceptance fee to confirm your seat. Report to the allotted IIT with all required documents for document verification.
Eligibility criteria for IIT admission:
The rank required for IIT admission depends on which IIT and which branch you are targeting. Given below are the expected JEE Advanced 2026 opening ranks for key branches at top IITs based on 2025 trends.
| Branch | IIT | Expected Opening Rank (General) |
| CSE | IIT Bombay | Under 70 |
| CSE | IIT Delhi | Under 100 |
| CSE | IIT Madras | Under 150 |
| CSE | IIT Kanpur | Under 200 |
| CSE | IIT Kharagpur | Under 350 |
| CSE | IIT Roorkee | Under 500 |
| EE | IIT Bombay | Under 200 |
| EE | IIT Delhi | Under 300 |
| Mechanical | IIT Bombay | Under 600 |
| Mechanical | IIT Delhi | Under 900 |
| Any branch | IIT Hyderabad | Under 3,500 |
| Any branch | IIT Indore | Under 4,000 |
| Any branch | IIT Gandhinagar | Under 4,500 |
| Any branch | New IITs | 5,000–15,000 |
Key point: Admission to IITs is based on JEE Advanced rank, not JEE Main rank. A student who qualifies JEE Advanced with AIR 5,000 can get into a good branch at a new IIT. JEE Main rank only determines JEE Advanced eligibility.
IITs are not only BTech colleges. They offer a wide range of programmes across levels.
| Programme | Duration | Admission Through |
| BTech | 4 years | JEE Advanced + JoSAA |
| B.Arch | 5 years | JEE Advanced + AAT |
| BS (dual degree with MSc) | 5 years | JEE Advanced + JoSAA |
| MTech | 2 years | GATE |
| MSc | 2 years | IIT JAM |
| MBA | 2 years | CAT |
| MDes | 2 years | CEED |
| BDes | 4 years | UCEED |
| PhD | 3–5 years | GATE / Direct Interview |

There are 23 IITs in India in 2026, all functioning under the Institutes of Technology Act 1961 and funded by the central government.
IIT Madras is ranked number 1 in India as per NIRF 2025. It has held the top position for several consecutive years. IIT Delhi ranks second and IIT Bombay ranks third.
The seven old IITs are IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee, and IIT Guwahati.
The total BTech seats across all 23 IITs is approximately 17,385 for 2026. Of these, approximately 6,287 seats are allocated through JoSAA.
The total 4-year tuition fee at most IITs ranges from ₹4.5 lakh to ₹9.5 lakh depending on the IIT. Including hostel, mess, and other charges, the total cost is approximately ₹10 lakh to ₹14 lakh over 4 years. SC/ST students pay no tuition fees.
For the most sought-after branches like CSE at top IITs, a JEE Advanced rank under 100 (general category) is needed. For any branch at new IITs, a rank between 5,000 and 15,000 can secure admission. All ranks refer to JEE Advanced AIR, not JEE Main rank.
IIT Bombay is widely considered the best IIT for CSE based on placement packages, recruiter quality, and alumni network. IIT Delhi and IIT Madras follow closely. Among new IITs, IIT Hyderabad has the strongest CSE program.
IIT Kharagpur recorded a highest package of ₹2.44 CPA (Cost Per Annum) in its most recent placement season, which was an international offer. IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi also regularly see international offers above ₹2 CPA. Domestic highest packages at top IITs typically range from ₹60 LPA to ₹1.5 CPA.
For most students, yes. Even the newest IIT carries the IIT brand, which opens more doors for higher studies abroad and research. If the alternative is a top NIT like NIT Trichy or NIT Warangal in a core branch, the comparison is closer. But for any other NIT, a new IIT is the better choice in most scenarios.
For BTech, no — JEE Advanced is the only route. For other programmes, IITs accept GATE (MTech), IIT JAM (MSc), CAT (MBA), UCEED (BDes), and CEED (MDes). PhD admissions can happen through direct interviews at many IITs.
