Understanding verbs and their types is important to master English grammar. Verbs are action words that show what a person or thing does. Once you clearly understand what verbs are, it becomes much easier to learn the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs.
A transitive verb shows an action that passes on to an object, while an intransitive verb shows an action that does not need an object. Knowing this difference helps in forming correct and meaningful sentences. Learning transitive and intransitive verbs not only improves writing and speaking skills but also strengthens overall grammar understanding.
| Aspect | Transitive Verb | Intransitive Verb |
| Meaning | When I use a transitive verb, it shows an action that passes on to an object. | When I use an intransitive verb, the action stays with the subject and doesn’t pass to any object. |
| Object Needed? | Yes, I always need an object to complete the meaning. | No, I don’t need an object. The meaning is clear without one. |
| Example Sentences | I ate an apple. (What did I eat? – an apple) | I slept early. (No object after the verb) |
| Question to Identify | I can ask “What?” or “Whom?” after the verb to find the object. | When I ask “What?” or “Whom?”, no answer comes because there’s no object. |
| Focus Area | Shows how my action affects something or someone. | Shows only the action or state of being of the subject. |
| Quick Tip | If my sentence feels incomplete without an object, it’s transitive! | If my sentence feels complete on its own, it’s intransitive! |
Read each sentence carefully. Identify whether the verb is Transitive (has an object) or Intransitive (has no object).
