In this Chapter it stated that forest did not simply refer to trees but rather it is literally like a living organism where plants, animals, soil, and even minute microorganisms all require each other. The chapter informs us how forests are the lungs of the earth since they provide us with oxygen and also absorb carbon dioxide, making the air clean and balanced.
It further describes the role of forests in retaining rainwater, floods and soil erosion. In the absence of forests, land is dry and lifeless. The chapter demonstrates that each of the components of a forest big trees, small herbs, shrubs, animals, birds, insects, and decomposers plays an essential role. The dead leaves and animal waste would not be wasted either since they are recycled by the decomposers into the earth as nutrients.
Forests are also used to provide people with wood, fruits, medicines, and other products. Although, the chapter cautions us against the harmfulness of deforestation (deforestation). In case forests are lost, this will disrupt the natural state of things and negatively affect human beings and animals.
Thus, the key point of this chapter is the fact that forests are really our lifeline. In the absence of them, the earth would not have life.
