Genetics and Ecology together account for more than a third of NEET Biology questions each year. They are also the two units students most often ask about when planning revision time, because they demand different study methods: Genetics rewards logical, problem-solving practice, while Ecology rewards factual recall.
This guide compares the two units on marks weightage, difficulty, time investment, and question format, and gives a study order recommendation based on how far you are from the exam.
NTA does not publish an official chapter-wise weightage document, so the figures below reflect a trend reading of recent papers rather than a fixed formula for any single upcoming exam.
Within Genetics, Molecular Basis of Inheritance is typically the single highest-yield chapter in Class 12 Biology, followed by Principles of Inheritance and Variation.
Genetics spans roughly 45 NCERT pages across the Class 12 textbook. At around 16 questions per year, this works out to about one question for every 3 pages of material, though the content is dense: experimental proofs, base-pairing calculations, and inheritance ratios all require worked practice, not just reading.
Ecology spans roughly 40 NCERT pages, slightly less in rationalised editions. At around 11 questions per year, its page-to-question ratio is similar to Genetics, but the type of content differs.
Genetics requires understanding mechanisms, not just recognising terms. This includes the biochemical steps of transcription and translation, reading pedigree charts, and solving cross probabilities. Mastering the unit from a weak base typically takes 20 to 25 hours of focused study, since the experimental proofs (Hershey-Chase, Meselson-Stahl) need to be understood rather than memorised as isolated facts.
Ecology concepts, such as mutualism, parasitism, or ecological pyramids, are simple to understand individually. The difficulty is volume: many examples, case studies, and legislative dates need to be retained. Most students can cover the unit in 12 to 15 hours, and it responds well to short, repeated recall sessions rather than long study blocks.

More than six months before the exam: study Genetics first. It needs more time to assimilate, and starting early avoids cramming its logic-heavy content close to the exam.
Inside the final 60 days: study Ecology first. Its faster mastery time means it converts study hours into marks more quickly under time pressure. Return to Genetics for review afterward.

If revising both units in the same period, alternate rather than block-study one at a time. Mechanistic material (transcription, replication, pedigree problems) is easier to process earlier in a study session; descriptive material (Ecology examples and data points) works well as a lower-intensity second block, since it depends on recall rather than working through a process.

Prioritise Genetics if you are targeting a top-tier rank and already have reasonable conceptual clarity. Application questions on codon usage or linkage maps are unforgiving if the underlying logic isn't solid, and this unit is difficult to build from scratch close to the exam.
Prioritise Ecology if you need to add marks quickly in the final stretch of preparation. Its questions track the NCERT text closely, so focused reading converts to marks faster than in Genetics.
Both units are necessary for a strong Biology score. The choice is about sequencing, not about skipping one in favour of the other.

If the exam is still months away, start with Genetics to build its conceptual base early. If the exam is close, secure Ecology first for faster marks, then return to Genetics. Both units carry substantial weightage every year, and a complete Biology score depends on covering both rather than favouring one permanently over the other.
