In the last segment, we introduced the topic of Electricity. In this segment, we will learn about the Electric cell and its types.
What is an Electric cell?
An electric cell is a device, which converts chemical energy into electrical energy.
Electric cells come in different types, depending on the chemicals used inside the cell. AA, AAA, DDD, CCC are the common sizes of cells or batteries. They also come in different voltages, a concept that you will learn in your higher grades.
Structure of an electric cell
An electric cell has a small metal cap at one end and a metal disc at the opposite end. There is a ‘+’ sign near the metal cap and a ‘−’ sign near the disc. These are the positive and negative terminals of the cell respectively.
Electric cell
An electric cell produces electricity from the chemicals stored inside it. Once the chemicals are used up, the cell stops producing electricity.
