Admission Process for Medical Colleges in India
There are various entrance exams to get admitted into the top medical colleges in India. Below is a list of the medical entrance exams aspirants need to appear for. To be eligible, candidates must secure 60% marks in their class 12th exams with mandatory PCB subjects.
- National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG)- The NEET-UG is an entrance examination for students seeking admission to medical and dental courses in both public and private medical colleges. The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the exam on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Lakhs of students across India take the NEET UG test every year at multiple examination centers.
- National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduate (NEET-PG) – Many students pursue a master’s degree in medicine after completing their undergraduate studies. Students must take the NEET PG test for postgraduate medical education courses, such as the Doctor of Medicine (MD), Master of Surgery (MS), or other postgraduate courses. The National Board of Examinations is responsible for conducting these examinations on behalf of the Ministry of HRD. As only a limited number of medical college seats are available, students face fierce competition for admission.
- All India Institute of Medical Sciences for Postgraduate (AIIMS PG) – AIIMS PG entrance exam allows students admission into 643 MD, MS, MDS, Doctor of Medicine (DM), and Master of Chirurgiae (MCh) seats. It is a computer-based test conducted twice a year across various cities in the country.
- Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research for MD/MS courses (JIPMER PG) – Puducherry’s JIPMER is among South India’s leading medical schools. To apply for undergraduate courses at JIPMER, students must take the JIPMER Entrance Exam. It is a computer-based test conducted twice a year, usually in January and July. However, the JIPMER PG Exam for admission to 125 PG seats is conducted once a year.
