| 1,000 – 2,000 | Mid-tier NIT CSE, all top IIITs |
| 2,000 – 4,000 | Good NIT branches, IIIT Allahabad IT |
| 4,000 – 8,000 | Newer NIT CSE, GFTIs, PPP IIITs |
| 8,000 – 15,000 | ECE/Mechanical in established NITs |
Important: SC and ST students pay zero tuition at all JoSAA-participating NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Hostel and mess fees still apply.
NITs reserve 50% of seats for candidates from the same state as the institute. HS quota closing ranks are significantly more accessible than OS quota closing ranks.
| NIT | Branch | OS Closing Rank 2025 | HS Closing Rank 2025 | Rank Relaxation |
| NIT Trichy | CSE | ~1,605 | ~4,500 | ~2,895 ranks easier |
| NIT Warangal | CSE | ~3,432 | ~6,000 – 7,000 | ~3,000 ranks easier |
| NIT Surathkal | CSE | ~2,500 | ~5,500 – 6,000 | ~3,000 ranks easier |
| NIT Calicut | CSE | ~5,500 | ~9,000 – 10,000 | ~4,000 ranks easier |
| NIT Hamirpur | CSE | ~30,000 | ~12,000 – 15,000 | ~15,000–18,000 ranks easier |
| NIT Jalandhar | CSE | ~25,000 | ~8,000 – 12,000 | ~15,000–17,000 ranks easier |
Key Rule: Tier 3 and Tier 4 NITs have the largest HS advantage. Rank relaxation of 15,000–30,000 is common for students applying to their home-state NIT.
Always fill your home-state NIT choices before OS quota choices in other states. HS closing rank is always easier to achieve.
GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) are often underrated. BIT Mesra and Tezpur University have stronger placements than many newer NITs.
| GFTI | Branch | Closing Rank 2025 (General, OS) | Notes |
| BIT Mesra, Ranchi | CSE | ~11,619 – 18,030 | Best GFTI for CSE |
| BIT Mesra, Ranchi | ECE | ~20,000 – 28,000 | Good placement record |

This section covers JEE Advanced rank vs IIT college options. JEE Advanced is required for IIT admission — JEE Main rank alone is not sufficient.
| JEE Advanced Rank | IIT | Branch Accessible |
| 1 – 100 | IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi | CSE, EE |
| 101 – 300 | IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur | CSE, EE |
| 301 – 1,000 | IIT Roorkee, IIT Hyderabad | CSE, ECE |
| 1,001 – 3,000 | Older IITs (non-CSE) + newer IITs (CSE) | ECE, Maths & Computing |
| 3,001 – 5,000 | IIT Jodhpur, IIT Ropar, IIT Tirupati | CSE, ECE |
| 5,001 – 10,000 | All newer IITs | ECE, Mechanical, Electrical |
| 10,000+ | Newest IITs | Civil, Chemical, Materials |
When filling JoSAA choices, follow this structure for every rank band.
| Choice Type | What It Means | Number of Choices |
| Dream (Stretch) | Colleges where closing rank is 10–20% better than your rank | Fill top 5–8 choices |
| Realistic | Colleges where your rank sits comfortably within closing rank | Fill next 10–15 choices |
| Safe | Colleges where your rank is well within last year's closing rank | Fill last 8–12 choices |
Total choices to fill: 25–40 minimum. There is no penalty for unused choices.
Never fill only dream choices. Students who do this often end up with no seat.
Rank = 8,000 (General OS):
Rank = 20,000 (General OS):
Rank = 40,000 (General OS):
This is the most common counselling dilemma. The answer depends on your career goal.
| Career Goal | What to Prioritise | Example at 15,000 rank |
| Software / Tech job | Branch (CSE/IT) over college reputation | IIIT Lucknow CSE > NIT Agartala ECE |
| Core engineering (GATE, PSU) | College reputation and legacy | NIT Silchar Mechanical > IIIT Kalyani CSE |
| Higher studies (M.Tech / MS abroad) | College name recognition | Older NIT any branch > newer IIIT CSE |
| Entrepreneurship / Startups | Branch + city location | IIIT Bangalore CSE > NIT Manipur CSE |
JEE Main 2025 had over 13.5 lakh registered candidates. JEE Main 2026 is expected to cross 14.5 lakh. More applicants means tighter cutoffs.
| Factor | Impact on 2026 Cutoff |
| More applicants (14.5 lakh+) | Cutoffs tighten by 300–800 ranks in top NITs |
| New AI/Data Science branches added | Pulls demand away from CSE — slight CSE easing |
| Difficult JEE Main 2026 paper | Relaxes cutoffs marginally |
| New IIT/NIT seats added | Eases cutoffs in those specific institutes |
| Female-only supernumerary seats | Separate pool — does not affect General GN ranks |
2026 Prediction: NIT Trichy, Warangal, and Surathkal CSE cutoffs may tighten by 100–300 ranks from 2025 levels. Mid-tier NIT and IIIT cutoffs expected to remain stable with ±5% variation.
Note 1. All closing ranks shown are from JoSAA 2025 Round 6. They are the most reliable basis for 2026 planning.
Note 2. 2026 official cutoffs will only be released on josaa.nic.in during JoSAA 2026 counselling rounds.
Note 3. Category ranks — not CRL — are used for reserved category seat allotment. Always check your category rank on your JEE Main 2026 scorecard.
Note 4. Home state NIT HS quota seats close at significantly higher ranks. Always fill HS choices before OS choices.
Note 5. Female-only pool seats at NITs have separate cutoffs. Female candidates should fill both gender-neutral and female-only choices in JoSAA.

A JEE rank wise college list 2026 maps your JEE Main All India Rank to colleges and branches you can get through JoSAA counselling. It is based on previous year JoSAA closing ranks. The list covers NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. 2026 official cutoffs will be released during JoSAA 2026 counselling on josaa.nic.in.
At 5,000 rank in General OS quota, CSE at NIT Calicut (closing rank ~5,500) is borderline. IIIT Allahabad IT (~4,817) and MNIT Jaipur CSE (~7,000) are accessible. NIT Trichy, Surathkal, and Warangal CSE are not accessible at this rank. ECE at NIT Trichy (~5,500) is borderline.
At 10,000 rank in General OS quota, CSE at NIT Durgapur (~11,000) is accessible. IIIT Bangalore CSE (~9,000) and NIT Jamshedpur CSE (~10,000) are also realistic. ECE at several mid-tier NITs is accessible. Through HS quota, your home-state NIT CSE may be accessible depending on the institute.
Home state (HS) quota at NITs gives access to better colleges at significantly higher rank numbers. NIT Trichy CSE HS closing rank is approximately 4,500 — nearly 3,000 ranks more accessible than the OS closing rank of 1,605. NIT Hamirpur and NIT Jalandhar HS advantage can be 15,000–30,000 ranks. Always fill HS choices first in JoSAA.
NITs with the lowest CSE cutoff (most accessible) in General OS quota are NIT Mizoram, NIT Nagaland, NIT Sikkim, and NIT Manipur — all with closing ranks above 1,50,000. Among established NITs, NIT Silchar (~14,000) and NIT Agartala (~20,000) have the most accessible CSE cutoffs.
ECE in NIT Trichy has stronger core engineering placements and institute reputation. CSE in a newer NIT has better software job prospects at campus level. For software roles, CSE in any decent IIIT beats ECE in a new NIT. For core/GATE paths, ECE in NIT Trichy is far superior to CSE in a new NIT.
For General category OS quota, a rank below approximately 95,000 is needed to qualify for any NIT seat in any branch. For HS quota, the cutoff is higher (more accessible). OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, and ST category candidates have separate and more accessible rank cutoffs.
Fill a minimum of 25–40 choices in JoSAA. There is no penalty for unused choices. Include a mix of dream (5–8), realistic (10–15), and safe (8–12) choices. Students who fill only 5–10 choices and all stretch options often end up without a seat. More choices always give better outcomes.
