Median – Definition and Solved Examples:
A median is a value that is found in the middle of a set of data. If there is an even number of data points, then the median is the average of the two middle values. If there is an odd number of data points, then the median is the value that is in the middle of the set.
Median Definition
The median is the middle number in a set of data. It is the number that is found in the exact middle when the data is arranged in order from smallest to largest. If there is an odd number of data points, the median is the middle number. If there is an even number of data points, the median is the average of the two middle numbers.
Relationship between Mean, Median, and Mode
The mean, median, and mode are all measures of central tendency. The mean is the most common, followed by the median, then the mode.
Median of Grouped Data
- To find the median of a set of data, first put all the data in order from smallest to largest. If there is an odd number of data points, the median is the middle value. If there is an even number of data points, the median is the average of the two middle values.
- For the data set {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10}, the median is 5.5. This is because the middle value is the average of the two middle values (5 and 6).
Median from an Ogive Curve
- The median from an ogive curve is the value that is halfway between the first and last values in the data set.
- A median is the line that divides a data set into two equal parts. It can be found by drawing a line through the middle of a data set, or by finding the average of the two middle values. The median from an ogive curve is the same as the median from any other data set. To find it, draw a line through the middle of the ogive curve, or find the average of the two middle values.
