What is Heron?

Heron is a common name for several species of large, long-legged wading birds in the family Ardeidae. They are usually gray or white, with black markings on the head and neck.

Types of Herons

There are many different types of herons. The most common herons are the great blue heron, the great egret, the snowy egret, and the little blue heron.

Squacco Heron

The Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides) is a small heron that is found in wetlands throughout Europe and parts of Asia. They are typically around 25-30 cm in length and have a wingspan of around 60 cm. They are a pale brown or grey in color, with a long neck and a reddish-brown beak. They eat small fish, amphibians, and invertebrates, and typically hunt by standing still and waiting for prey to come close. They are a common sight in many wetland areas, and can be quite vocal, making a variety of cooing and croaking noises.
