Horace Danby had a good reputation in the society. He was about fifty and unmarried. He made locks and had two helpers. He was well and happy. But he had attacks of hay fever in summer. But he was not completely honest. He had served his first and only sentence in a prison library. He had a passion for books. He loved rare and expensive books.
Danby as an unusual thief
Horace Danby robbed a safe every year. He stole enough to last for twelve months. He secretly bought the books he loved through an agent. He was now out on committing a robbery.
Planning before a theft
For two weeks Horace had studied the house of Shotover Grange. He had to burgle this house. It had fifteen thousand pounds worth of jewels in the Grange safe. He intended to buy three interesting books coming up for sale in the autumn. He had seen where the housekeeper hung the key. He had also studied everything of the house. These were the rooms, the electric wiring, paths and the garden before the theft.
Danby inside the house for stealing
Horace Danby entered the house. A small dog lay in the kitchen. He silenced it calling it by name. The safe was in the drawing room. There was a great bowl of flowers on the table. He felt his nose tickle. He started sneezing. The safe was not hard to open. He went into the hall to cut the wire of the alarm bell.
Meets a young and pretty lady
Then he heard a voice. The voice told him that he could cure the sneeze. It was the voice of a woman. She stood in the doorway. She was young and pretty. She was dressed in the red. She said that she had come back in time. But she had not expected to meet a burglar.
Pleads her for going free
The young lady very confidently asked Horace what he was doing. His first thought was to run. The lady told him that she would telephone the police. She would tell it about him. Horace Danby told her to let him go and forget she ever saw him. But the lady laughed and he begged her. He promised her never to commit a burglary if she let him go.
Lady’s condition for his freedom
The lady had by now impressed him that she was the landlady. She put one condition for letting Horace go. She had made up a false story to trick in Danby. She told him that she had promised her husband to take her jewels to their bank. She had, however, left them in the safe. She told him she wanted to wear the jewels in a party that night. She came down to get them. But she had forgotten the numbers to open the safe. Horace assured her that he would open the safe for her. So he opened the safe within an hour and gave the jewels to her.
Horace Danby arrested
On the third day, Horace thought of the books which he wanted. He would have to look for another safe. But he never got a chance to burgle another safe. By noon a policeman had arrested him for the jewel robbery at Shotover Grange.
The real thing is out
Danby’s fingerprints were all over the room. He had opened the safe without gloves. He told the police that the landlady of the house had asked him to open that safe. But the landlady herself was a gray-haired woman of sixty. She said the story of Danby was nonsense.
Horace’s regrets
Horace is now the assistant librarian in the prison. He often thinks of the charming and clever young lady. She was in his profession. She had simply tricked him. Danby gets angry when anyone talks about ‘honour among thieves’.

होरेस डैनबी की समाज में अच्छी प्रतिष्ठा थी। वह लगभग पचास वर्ष का और बिना शादीशुदा था। वह ताले बनाता था और उसने दो सहायक रखे हुए थे। वह खुश और ठीक था। परन्तु ग्रीष्म ऋतु में उसे परागज ज्चर हो जाता था। परन्तु वह पूर्ण रूप से ईमानदार नहीं था। उसने अपनी पहली और सिर्फ एक ही सज़ा जेल की लायब्रेरी में काटी थी। उसमें पुस्तकों के प्रति बहुत लगाव था। उसे महँगी और दुर्लभ पुस्तकों से प्यार था।
डैनबी एक असाधारण चोर
होरेस डैनबी हरेक वर्ष एक सेफ में सेन्ध लगाता था। वह इतना धन चुराता था कि बारह महीनों तक चले। वह एक एजेन्ट से चुपचाप पुस्तकें खरीदता था जिन्हें वह प्यार करता था। अब वह एक डकैती करने निकला था।
चोरी से पहले योजना

होरेस डैनबी घर में घुस गया। एक छोटा कुत्ता रसोईघर में लेटा हुआ था। उसने इसे उसका नाम लेकर चुपचाप कर दिया। सेफ ड्राईंग रूम में थी। मेज़ पर फूलों का एक बड़ा कटोरा था। उसने अपने नाक में गुदगुदाहट अनुभव की। उसने छींकना आरम्भ कर दिया। सेफ खोलने में कठिन नहीं थी। चेतावनी की घण्टी की तार काटने के लिए वह हॉल में प्रविष्ट हो गया।
युवा और सुन्दर महिला से मुलाकात
तब उसने एक आवाज़ सुनी। आवाज़ ने उसे कहा कि वह छींक का इलाज करा सकता है। यह एक महिला की आवाज़ थी। वह दरवाजे में खड़ी थी। वह युवा और सुन्दर थी। वह लाल कपड़े पहने हुए थी। उसने कहा कि वह समय से आ गई थी। परन्तु उसे एक सेन्धमार से मिलने की आशा नहीं थी।
स्वतंत्र होकर चले जाने की प्रार्थना
युवा महिला ने बड़े विश्वास से होरेस से पूछा कि वह क्या कर रहा था। उसका पहला विचार दौड़ने का था। महिला ने उसे बताया कि वह पुलिस को टेलीफोन कर देगी। वह उसे उसके बारे में बताएगी। होरेस डैनबी ने उसे बताया कि उसे जाने दे और भूल जाए कि उस (महिला) ने कभी उसे (होरेस को) देखा है। परन्तु महिला हँसी और उस (होरेस) ने उस (महिला) से माफी माँगी। उसने कहा कि यदि वह (महिला) उसे (होरेस को) जाने देगी तो वह कभी सेन्ध नहीं लगाएगा।
महिला की उसकी स्वतंत्रता के लिये शर्त
महिला ने अब तक उसे प्रभावित कर दिया था कि वह मकान मालकिन है। उसने होरेस को जाने देने के लिए एक शर्त रख दी। उसने डैनबी को फँसाने के लिए एक झूठी कहानी गढ़ ली थी। उसने उसे बताया कि उसने अपने पति से बैंक में अपने हीरे-जवाहरात लाने का वायदा किया था। परन्तु उसने इन्हें सेफ में छोड़ दिया था। उसने उसे बताया कि उस रात वह एक पाटी में इन हीरे-जवाहरात को पहनना चाहती थी। वह उन्हें लेने के लिए नीचे आई। परन्तु वह सेफ खोलने के लिए नम्बर भूल गई थी। होरेस ने उसे विश्वास दिलाया कि वह उसके लिए सेफ खोल देगा। इसलिए उसने एक घण्टे में सेफ खोल दी और हीरे जवाहरात उसे दे दिए।

होरेस के पश्चातापे
होरेस अब जेल में सहायक पुस्तकालयाध्यक्ष है। वह सुन्दर, और चालाक, युवा महिला के बारे में प्रायः सोचता है। वह उसके पेशे से थी। उसने केवल उसे धोखा दिया था। डैनबी गुस्से में आ जाता है जब कोई ‘चोरों के सम्मान’ के बारे में बताता है।
