    Gorilla Population

The gorilla is one of the world’s most iconic animals, yet it is also one of the most endangered. Mountain gorillas are currently listed as critically endangered by the IUCN, with an estimated population of just 880 individuals. Low population density, coupled with the high mortality rates associated with living in a tropical rainforest, leaves the mountain gorilla particularly vulnerable to extinction.

There are several factors contributing to the decline of the gorilla population. One of the most significant is habitat loss and degradation. The forests where gorillas live are being cleared for agriculture, timber, and mining, or are being fragmented by roads and other development. This leaves the gorillas with less and less space to live in, and makes it increasingly difficult for them to move between different areas to find food and shelter.

Another major threat to gorillas is poaching. They are being killed for their meat and for their body parts, which are used in traditional medicine. They are also being hunted as pests, because they sometimes raid crops.

In order to protect the gorillas, it is essential to address the factors that are driving them to extinction. This includes working to halt the destruction of their habitat, increasing law enforcement to combat poaching, and educating local communities about the importance of the gorillas and how they can help to protect them.
