    William Thomson, better known as Lord Kelvin, was one of the most prominent physicists of the nineteenth century. He developed the first mathematical model of the atom, which is known as Thomson’s atomic model. His model is based on ten postulates, which are listed below.

    1. The atom is the smallest particle of an element that has the chemical properties of that element.

    2. The atom is composed of a nucleus and electrons.

    3. The nucleus is composed of protons and neutrons.

    4. The number of protons in the nucleus determines the atomic number of the element.

    5. The number of neutrons in the nucleus determines the mass number of the element.

    Drawbacks of Thomson’s Model

    1. Thomson’s model is static, meaning that it does not account for the dynamics of the atom.

    2. Thomson’s model does not account for the existence of subatomic particles.
