    • What’s Next?

In the previous segment, we learnt about Intersecting lines. In this segment, we will learn about Parallel lines and Parallel Planes.

    What are Parallel lines?

Lines which lie on the same plane and do not intersect are called Parallel lines.

    For example,

In the figure below, there are three lines: p, q, and r. Lines p and q lie in plane A while line q is perpendicular to plane A.

    q

    A

    p

    r

    Parallel and non-parallel lines

None of the three lines intersects each other.

But since line q does not lie in plane A, it is not parallel to either line p or line r. Only lines p and r are parallel to each other as they lie in the same plane.

    What are Parallel planes?

Planes which do not intersect are Parallel planes.

An example of parallel planes is opposite surfaces of a cube.
