    • What’s Next?

In the previous segment, we learnt how to construct a circle using a given radius. In this segment, we will learn how to construct a line segment and its copy.

How to construct a line segment?

We will look at two ways to construct a line segment of a given length, for example, line segment AB of 4.5 cm.

Constructing a line segment using a ruler

Step 1: Place a ruler on a paper and mark 2 points, A, at the 0 cm mark and B, at the 4.5 cm mark.

    A

    B

    Step 1

    Step 2: Join points A and B.

    A

    B

Constructing a line segment using this method is not foolproof as it can result in positioning error while using the ruler.

    Positioning error

The next method overcomes this problem.

Constructing a line segment using a ruler and a compass

Step 1: Draw a line l and mark a point A on it.

    Step 1

Step 2: Place the pointer of the compass on the 0 mark of the ruler and extend the pencil end till the 4.5 cm mark.
