Production of a commodity through the natural process is an activity of the primary sector. The primary sector directly exploits natural resources to produce natural products. This sector has raw materials, which are further processed or manufactured in association with industrial activity in the secondary sector to make goods that can be used for consumption. The primary sector includes farming, forestry, animal husbandry, fishing, and dairy. The primary sector employs more than fifty per cent of the workforce in its economic activities, and most rural households depend on the primary sector to earn a livelihood. Though the primary sector has the highest labour absorption capacity, it contributes the least among other sectors to the Gross Domestic Product of the Indian economy due to the persistence of underemployment of workers in this sector.
