Production of blood cells occurs in the red bone marrow. Muscles are responsible for body movement and for maintenance of body posture. As muscular tissue contracts, it produces heat (thermogenesis). Much of the heat generated by muscle is used to maintain normal body temperature. Involuntary contractions of skeletal muscles can increase the rate of heat production (shivering thermogenesis).
