JEE Main 2026 Session 2 results were declared on April 20, 2026 by NTA. With ~15.5 lakh unique candidates appearing this year, knowing exactly which college you can get at 95 percentile, 90 percentile, or 85 percentile in JEE Main 2026 is the first step toward smart counselling. This guide breaks down your expected All India Rank (AIR), college options across NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and private universities, category-wise chances, and branch availability — for all three percentile brackets, in one place.
Before jumping to college lists, understand what your percentile tells you. Your JEE Main percentile is not your marks out of 300. It is a relative score that shows what percentage of candidates scored equal to or below you in your session.
NTA uses a multi-session normalization formula to calculate percentiles. Because different shifts have different difficulty levels, your raw marks are normalized before percentiles are assigned. This means two students with different raw marks can end up with the same percentile.
Percentile to AIR Conversion (2026 estimate, ~15.5 lakh candidates):
| Percentile | Expected AIR (General) |
| 99.5+ | Top 750 |
| 99 | ~6,000–12,000 |
| 98 | ~12,000–25,000 |
| 95 | ~35,000–60,000 |
| 90 | ~1,00,000–1,55,000 |
| 85 | ~1,50,000–2,50,000 |
Note: Actual AIR depends on total candidates in both sessions, NTA normalization, and number of unique test-takers. Use this table as a planning guide, not a guarantee.
A 95 percentile in JEE Main 2026 gives you an estimated AIR of 35,000–60,000 in the General category. This is a strong score and opens up mid-tier NITs, newer IIITs, and GFTIs, though top-3 NITs in CSE will remain out of reach for General category candidates.
95 percentile is a genuinely good score. For OBC/EWS candidates, this score becomes significantly more powerful — the category rank drops by roughly 40–50%, giving access to several NITs that are beyond reach for General category at the same percentile. For SC/ST candidates, CSE at mid-tier NITs is very much on the table at 95 percentile.

At 95 percentile General category, CSE in top-5 NITs is unlikely. Instead:
A 90 percentile in JEE Main 2026 corresponds to an estimated AIR of 1,00,000–1,55,000 in the General category. This score puts top and mid-tier NITs largely out of reach via JoSAA for General category students, but there are still solid government and private options available.
90 percentile is above-average and is respected by many quality institutions. For OBC candidates, this score can unlock some lower NITs. For SC/ST candidates, mid-tier NITs with non-CSE branches are possible. For General category, the focus shifts to GFTIs, state colleges, and top private universities.

These options are narrow and depend heavily on Home State quota and category:
| College | Branch | Quota | Category |
| NIT Agartala | Chemical, Bioengineering, Civil | HS | General (HS only) |
| NIT Manipur | Civil, ECE | HS | General (HS only) |
| NIT Arunachal Pradesh | Civil, Mechanical | HS | General (HS only) |
| NIT Meghalaya | Civil, Mechanical | HS | General (HS only) |
| NIT Mizoram | All branches | HS | General (HS only) |
| NIT Rourkela | CSE, IT | OS | SC/ST |
| NIT Trichy | CSE | OS | SC/ST |
For General category without Home State advantage, NIT admission at 90 percentile through JoSAA is very difficult. CSAB special rounds are your best opportunity — many students freeze their JoSAA seat early and miss CSAB, where North-Eastern NIT seats open up.
| College | Branch | Notes |
| IIIT Bhagalpur | CSE, ECE, Mechatronics | Good chances |
| IIIT Manipur | CSE | Comfortable |
| IIIT Agartala | CSE, ECE | Comfortable |
| IIIT Pune | CSE | Borderline |
| IIIT Sri City | CSE, ECE | Possible |
| IIIT Surat | CSE | Good chances |
| IIIT Vadodara | CSE | Possible |
| IIIT Kurnool | CSE, ECE | Comfortable |
| IIIT Lucknow | IT, ECE | Borderline |
| College | Branch |
| BIT Mesra, Ranchi | Chemical, Mechanical, Production |
| Assam University, Silchar | CSE, IT |
| CIT Kokrajhar | CSE, ECE |
| Central University of Jammu | CSE |
| IET Lucknow | Mechanical, Civil, Electrical |
| IIIT Allahabad (via DASA) | IT |
| NIFFT Ranchi | Engineering (Manufacturing) |
Do not overlook state-level counselling. At 90 percentile, many strong state government colleges are within reach:
| College | Branch | Approx. Fee |
| VIT Vellore | CSE, AI, ECE | ₹7–9 lakh/year |
| Thapar University | CSE, Mechanical | ₹4–5 lakh/year |
| BITS Pilani (via BITSAT) | — | Separate exam |
| SRM Chennai | CSE, ECE | ₹3–4 lakh/year |
| Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham | CSE, ECE | ₹3–4 lakh/year |
| Manipal Institute of Technology | CSE, ECE | ₹4–5 lakh/year |
| KIIT Bhubaneswar | CSE, ECE | ₹4 lakh/year |
| LPU Jalandhar | CSE (AI, DS) | ₹2–3 lakh/year |
An 85 percentile in JEE Main 2026 corresponds to an expected AIR of 1,50,000–2,50,000 in the General category and roughly 51–70 marks out of 300, depending on shift difficulty. While top and mid NITs via All India quota are not accessible for General category students at this score, there are meaningful options — especially through state counselling, GFTIs, and private universities.
85 percentile is an above-average score in absolute terms — you have outperformed 85% of all JEE Main candidates. However, in the competitive landscape of NIT admissions, it falls below the General category threshold for most NITs via the All India quota. That said:
| College | Branch | Quota | Category |
| NIT Agartala | Bioengineering, Chemical, Civil | HS | General |
| NIT Manipur | Civil, Mechanical | HS | General |
| NIT Arunachal Pradesh | Civil | HS | General |
| NIT Meghalaya | Civil, Mechanical | HS | General |
| NIT Nagaland | All branches | HS | General |
| NIT Rourkela | CSE, ECE | OS | SC/ST |
| NIT Calicut | Civil, Mechanical | OS | SC/ST |
| NIT Warangal | Civil, Chemical | OS | SC |
| NIT Trichy | Civil, Metallurgical | OS | SC |
Important: For General category, NIT admission at 85 percentile is only realistic through Home State quota in North-Eastern/newer NITs, not through the All India quota. Category reservation is the bigger lever here.
| College | Branch | Notes |
| IIIT Agartala | CSE, ECE | Comfortable |
| IIIT Manipur | CSE | Comfortable |
| IIIT Surat | CSE | Good chances |
| IIIT Kurnool | CSE, ECE | Good chances |
| IIIT Una | CSE, ECE | Possible |
| IIIT Raichur | CSE | Good chances |
| IIIT Kalyani | CSE, ECE | Good chances |
| IIIT Nagpur | CSE | Possible |
| College | Branch |
| Assam University, Silchar | Mechanical, Civil |
| CIT Kokrajhar | Civil, ECE |
| Central University of Jammu | CSE |
| Mizoram University | CSE, IT |
| NIT Jote (NERIST) | Civil, Mechanical |
| IIEST Shibpur | Non-CSE branches |
State-level counselling is the strongest option for General category students at 85 percentile:
| College | Branch | Approx. Fee |
| VIT Vellore / Chennai | CSE, ECE, Mechanical | ₹7–9 lakh/year |
| SRM Chennai | CSE, AI, Data Science | ₹3–4 lakh/year |
| KIIT Bhubaneswar | CSE, ECE | ₹4 lakh/year |
| Amrita University | CSE, ECE | ₹3–4 lakh/year |
| LPU Jalandhar | CSE (AI, DS, Cyber) | ₹2–3 lakh/year |
| UPES Dehradun | CSE (specializations) | ₹3–4 lakh/year |
| Symbiosis Institute of Tech | CSE, Mechanical | ₹3–4 lakh/year |
| Chandigarh University | CSE, ECE | ₹1.5–2.5 lakh/year |
| JAIN University | CSE, AI | ₹3 lakh/year |
This table helps you find your exact scenario quickly:
| Percentile | General (AIR) | OBC-NCL | SC | ST |
| 95 | Mid NITs (non-CSE), newer IIITs | Good NITs (ECE/CSE in mid NITs) | Top NITs (CSE possible) | Top NITs (CSE) |
| 90 | NE NITs (HS only), GFTIs, top private | Mid NITs (non-CSE), newer IIITs | Mid NITs (CSE possible) | Mid NITs (CSE) |
| 85 | NE NITs (HS only), GFTIs, state colleges | Lower NITs, newer IIITs, GFTIs | Good NITs (ECE/CSE) | Good NITs (CSE) |
Understanding the relationship between marks, percentile, and rank helps you cross-verify your position:
| Marks (approx.) | Percentile | AIR (General) |
| 180–200 | ~95–96 | 35,000–55,000 |
| 155–175 | ~92–94 | 60,000–90,000 |
| 120–150 | ~88–92 | 90,000–1,30,000 |
| 90–120 | ~85–88 | 1,30,000–2,00,000 |
| 60–90 | ~80–85 | 2,00,000–3,00,000 |
Marks ranges vary by shift difficulty. These are approximations based on April 2026 session trends.
After JEE Main results, admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs happens through JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counselling — not directly. Here is how it works:
Critical tip: Run state-level counselling registrations in parallel with JoSAA. They have different deadlines and you can participate in both. Missing a state counselling deadline is a common and costly mistake.

JEE Advanced eligibility is based on JEE Main performance. For 2026, the expected qualifying cutoffs are:
| Category | Expected Qualifying Percentile |
| General (CRL) | 93–95 percentile |
| OBC-NCL | 79–82 percentile |
| SC | 60–63 percentile |
| ST | 47–50 percentile |
| Gen-EWS | 80–82 percentile |
| PwD | Below 1 percentile |
Students at 95 percentile in General category are on the borderline for JEE Advanced — whether they qualify depends on the final cutoff announced by NTA. Students at 90 and 85 percentile in the General category are generally below the JEE Advanced cutoff.
This is one of the most important decisions you will face after results. Here is a rational framework:
Consider dropping if:
Do not drop if:
A gap year is a deliberate strategic investment — not a default response to disappointment. Many strong engineers graduated from GFTIs and private colleges and built excellent careers.

Yes, but it is difficult for General category through the All India quota. Your best bets are North-Eastern NITs through CSAB special rounds, or Home State quota if you are domiciled in states like Nagaland, Mizoram, or Manipur. OBC-NCL candidates at 90 percentile have better chances at lower-tier NITs.
For General category via JoSAA All India quota — extremely unlikely except in the newest North-Eastern NITs through Home State quota. SC/ST candidates at 85 percentile can access several good NITs including mid-tier ones.
Based on ~15.5 lakh candidates, 95 percentile corresponds to an estimated AIR of 35,000–60,000. The exact rank depends on total valid candidates after both sessions.
90 percentile corresponds to an estimated AIR of approximately 1,00,000–1,55,000.
85 percentile corresponds to an estimated AIR of approximately 1,50,000–2,50,000.
VIT Vellore, Thapar University, and KIIT Bhubaneswar are the most consistently well-ranked options. For CSE specifically, VIT and Thapar offer strong placements that rival several government colleges.
In absolute terms, yes — you have outperformed 85% of all candidates. For NIT admission via the General category All India quota, it falls short of the typical cutoff. But for GFTIs, state colleges, and private universities, 85 percentile is a solid score.
At 85 percentile, CSE in top NITs is not available for General category. Core branches like Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, and Electrical at lower-tier NITs are possible through Home State or reserved category quota. In newer IIITs and GFTIs, CSE is accessible.
JoSAA is the primary counselling process for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) runs special rounds after JoSAA ends to fill remaining vacancies — particularly in North-Eastern and newer institutions. Students at 85–90 percentile often find their best government college options in CSAB rounds that General category students abandon.
State counselling portals (REAP, JAC Delhi, TNEA, MHT CET, KCET, WBJEE, AKTU, etc.) are completely separate from JoSAA. Register on the relevant state portal simultaneously — do not wait for JoSAA results before registering, as state counselling deadlines are often earlier.
