- 3D Shapes from Nets – Example
- What’s Next?
In the previous segment, we learnt how to convert a net to its solid. In this segment, we will look at a few nets and find out if they can form 3D shapes.
Example
Q. There are four nets whose faces are squares as shown below:
1

Nets
Which of the above nets when folded will result in a cube? Solution:
Net 1:
Net 1
Place the net as if it is lying on the plane. Make the bottom two squares vertical. The shape will look like as follows:
Step 1
Make the squares on either side vertical as follows:
Step 2
From this shape, no matter how it is folded, a cube cannot be formed.
Net 2:
Net 2
Drawing the net as if it is lying on a plane as follows:
Step 1
Make the faces on the top and bottom vertical as shown below:
Step 2
Tilt the two square faces on the left on their adjacent square. Also, raise the square at the extreme right vertical to get the following figure:
Step 3
Tilt the three faces on the right to the left. This gives a cube.
