Respiration is a process in which the energy in food molecules is used to produce ATP, a molecule that provides energy for the cell. In plants, this process takes place in the chloroplasts. The light energy from the sun is used to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. The oxygen is released from the plant and the glucose is used to produce ATP.
