    A committee of government was formed for the establishment of 4 higher institutes to set the direction for the development of technical education in the country in 1946.

    Its planning was started in 1957 and the first batch was admitted in 1958 with 100 students. This university contains top rank holders in science and engineering disciplines. IIT Mumbai is highly known for its 4,5 and 2-year courses for which the entry is through a joint entrance exam, joint admission test for masters, graduate aptitude test in engineering and after doing this course the degree which is offered are -bachelor of technology, 4-year bachelor of science,2 year master of science, 5-year IDDP(interdisciplinary dual degree programme),2 or 3 year master of technology.

    It has a total of 15 academic departments in which there are 20 centres of excellence and 4 interdisciplinary programs apart from that it has a management program. It has a department dedicated only for the study of public policy; it offers doctoral and postdoctoral level courses in public policy. It has five primary research areas, digital societies.

    BRIEF

    CAMPUS – It has an area of about 545 acres and is located at Powai in east Mumbai between Bihar and Powai lakes.

    • It mainly comprises the main building, various departmental annexes, and auditoriums.
    • All are connected by an infinite corridor. and beyond the convocation hall lies most of the hostels.
    • In total there are 18 hostels of which 2 hostels and the newly constructed wing are for female students.
    • Due to some sort of proximity to the Sanjay Gandhi national park the campus contains green cover.
    • The most important of them is their computer center; it started functioning in 1986 and is continuously updated.
    • There are many experimental activities being set up like laboratories, for robotics, biotechnology, microelectronics, microprocessor, telematics, and many more.

    CULTURAL AND NON-ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES –

    • It was started in 1998. It is held regularly in the month of December every year.
    • It is known as Asia’s largest science and technology festival.
    • These festivals are organized basically by students by themselves. All these organisations are sponsored by private enterprises.
    • Apart from all these various other engineering streams based festivals are being carried out to motivate students towards science and technology.
    • All these include zephyr, azeotropy, radiance, aavriti, and Dakar. The institute has music clubs.
    • The dean provides necessary liaison with industry and sponsoring agencies. It helps the industry to identify faculty expertise and institutional facilities, and assists faculty in identifying industry problems.
    • It consists of central facilities such as central facilities, a central library, a central workshop, and the printing press.
    • There is an annual festival known as mood indigo, generally held in the month of December.

    There was a function called diamond jubilee, which was held in 2018 and in that function, the chief guest was P.M Narendra Modi as a chief guest of convocation function.
