IIT Delhi was founded in 1961 as the College of Engineering in Delhi. After being designated as an ‘Institute of National Importance,’ it was renamed the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. It was then designated a Deemed University with authority to establish academic policies, administer examinations, and confer degrees. One of the oldest IITs in India, it is a public technical and research institution. According to the NIRF 2021, IITD ranks second for ‘Engineering,’ fourth ‘Overall,’ and fifth for ‘Management.

    IITD has 19 Centers of Excellence, four of which were established by IIT Delhi, eight of which are sponsored by industry, and seven of which are funded through sponsored projects. Currently, the Institute provides over 85 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses. IITD offers these courses across 16 departments and six different schools.

    Infrastructure at IIT Delhi

    IIT Delhi is located on a 325-acre campus with cutting-edge technology. The renowned Institute boasts one of India’s best campuses, with cutting-edge facilities, modern amenities, and research labs. Kusuma School of Biological Sciences, School of Artificial Intelligence, School of Public Policy, Bharti School of Telecommunication Technology and Management, Amar Nath & Shashi Khosla School of Information Technology, Amar Nath & Shashi Khosla School of Information Technology, Amar Nath & Shashi Khosla School of Information Technology, Amar Nath & Shashi Khosla School of Information Technology, Amar Nath & Shashi K and School of Interdisciplinary Research are among the Deemed University’s six schools.

    Both domestic and international students can stay at IIT Delhi’s hostels. IIT Delhi’s classrooms are equipped with audio-visual aids and digital smart boards to foster innovative and interactive learning. Seminar rooms, auditoriums, leisure laboratories, mess, canteen, gym, sports complex, convenience store, ATM, healthcare centre, and other amenities are available at IIT Delhi. The following are some of IIT Delhi’s infrastructure USPs:

    Library: A central library and departmental libraries make up the IIT Delhi library system. The library offers 690 current journals and a large selection of science and technology books. The library’s holdings are 1.94 lakh books, 1.03 bound volumes of journals, over 26,000 standards, 2,200+ microfilms, and 2,261+ miscellaneous items. Videocassettes, CDs, and online electronic journals have also been incorporated.

    Cafeteria: Near the academic buildings, IIT Delhi offers a cafeteria and a South Indian food court (Southy) in the boys’ hostel area. In the institute area, there are numerous shops, such as Amul, Lipton, Nescafe, and Cafe Coffee Day. A tea stopover can be found at several hostels in Kumaon, Zanskar, Aravali, Girnar, and Karakoram.

    Hostels: There are 14 hostels at IIT Delhi, with 11 for guys and three for girls. Nilgiri, Karakoram, Aravali, Jwalamukhi, Satpura, Zanskar, Kumaon, Vindyachal, Shivalik, Girnar, and Udaigir are the boys’ hostels, while Kailash and Himadri are the ladies’ dormitories.


    Sports complex: IIT Delhi is known for its sports. Thus it provides students with a variety of practice courts, including badminton, tennis, volleyball, and basketball courts, cricket and football grounds, athletic tracks, a swimming pool, weightlifting and taekwondo auditoriums, and so on.

    The majority of candidates get admitted to IIT Delhi based on their performance in national entrance tests. Candidates for B.Tech and B.Arch programmes must pass all JEE exams, including JEE Mains and JEE Advanced, and attain a higher score or rank.
