OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and cognitive function in a population-based cohort of older adults.

METHODS: This study included 546 participants aged ≥65 from the cross-sectional Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2008-2009. Serum 25(OH)D levels were measured using a radioimmunoassay. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was used to assess cognitive function.

RESULTS: The mean (standard deviation) serum 25(OH)D level was 20.8 (7.8) ng/mL. After adjusting for potential confounders, including age, sex, education, body mass index, and household income, lower serum 25(OH)D levels were significantly associated with worse cognitive function as assessed by the MMSE score (β=-0.097, p=0.004). This association was more pronounced in participants with lower levels of education (β=-0.141, p=0.002) and those living in households with lower incomes (β=-0.126, p=0.023).

CONCLUSION: Lower serum 25(OH)D levels were associated with worse cognitive function in a population-based cohort of older adults. These findings suggest that vitamin D deficiency may be a risk factor for cognitive decline in older adults.
