    Understanding positive and negative integers on a number line

    • The following figure represents a number line that shows zero in the middle, positive integers on the right, and negative ones on the left:

    -6 -5 -4

    -3 -2 -1

    0 1 2 3 4 5 6

    Integers on a number line

    • On the number line, the numbers increase in value towards the right and decrease in value towards the left.

    For example, consider the number 2.

      • Any number to the right of 2, for example, 5, is greater than 2.
      • Any number to its left, for example, 1 or -3, is less than 2.
