How does light propagate inside the eye?
- When looking at an object which is at some distance away, the light from that object enters our eye and falls on the cornea first.
- This light is then refracted by the cornea and it travels through the transparent fluid called the aqueous humor.
Aqueous humor
- From this fluid, the light enters the pupil and falls on the lens inside.
- The eye lens is a biconvex lens that refracts the light such that all light coming from a point on an object is focused on the retina, where a real and inverted image is formed.
Refraction of light inside the eye
- However before this light falls on the retina, it first travels in the space between the retina and the lens. This space is filled up with another transparent fluid called the vitreous humor.
Vitreous humor
- These light signals then travel through the optic nerve as impulses and to the brain’s
occipital lobe, where the image is set upright.
