Filariasis is a disease caused by roundworms of the Filarioidea type that are spread by blood-feeding insects like black flies and mosquitoes. These parasites are found in subtropical parts of southern Asia, Africa, the South Pacific, and parts of South America.
The disease is not acquired in temperate areas like Europe or the United States. Filariasis belongs to the group of diseases called helminthiases. The disease can be diagnosed through direct observation of microfilariae in peripheral blood or by finding a circulating antigen in the blood. With early diagnosis and proper treatment, it is possible to manage the disease and reduce its impact on patients’ lives
