- What’s Next?
In the previous segment, we learnt about Fertilisation and post-fertilisation. In this segment, we will learn about Seed dispersal.
What is Seed?
A seed is a structure that contains the embryo within it.
What is Seed dispersal?
The process by which seeds are dispersed to distant places by various agents is known as the dispersal of seeds.
Four major agents help in seed dispersal: wind, water, explosion, and animals.
Seed dispersal by wind
Seeds of few plants like dandelions have parachute-like or hair-like structures attached to them. These structures are so light in weight that they easily get carried by the wind carrying the seed along with them.
Dispersal of seeds by wind
Seed dispersal by water
Fruits like coconut float on water. They move with water and travel far across seas and oceans.
Dispersal of seeds by water
Seed dispersal by the explosion
In some plants, the fruits or pods containing seeds burst on their own with a considerable force which throws the seeds at a distance. Broom and pea plants are examples of such type of dispersal.
