Construction and Working of Meter bridge: What is a meter bridge? How does it work? Here is all you need to know about the Construction and Working of Meter bridge. A meter bridge is made out of a 1 m long wire with a uniform cross-sectional area stretched taut and clamped between two thick metallic strips bent at right angles with two gaps to link resistors. A key is used to link the clamped endpoints of the wire to a cell. The metallic strip in the middle of the two gaps is attached to one end of a galvanometer. The galvanometer’s opposite end is attached to a jockey, which moves along the wire to form an electrical connection. R is an unidentified resistance that connects one of the gaps. We link a standard known resistance S across the other gap.

    What is a meter bridge?

    • A meter bridge is an electrical device that can be used to determine the value of unknown resistance. A meter-long wire with a consistent cross-section is used to make it. Because of their high resistance and low-temperature coefficient of resistance, this wire is either nichrome, manganin, or constantan.
    • A Wheatstone bridge is used to create a meter bridge or a Slide wire bridge. It’s the simplest and most practical use of a Wheatstone bridge.

    Working of meter bridge

    The working of meter bridge is the same as that of a Wheatstone bridge. A Wheatstone bridge works on the principle of null deflection, which states that when the resistance ratios in the two arms are equal, no current flows through the circuit’s middle arm. Consider the Wheatstone Bridge diagram. It is made up of four resistances: P, Q, R, and S, as well as an EMF E battery.

    1) A meter bridge is made out of a 1m long wire with a uniform cross-section area that is tightly stretched.

    2)This wire is then carefully clamped between two metal strips bent at right angles, as indicated in the image below:

    3)Resistances are connected within the gap between the metal stripes. R, a resistance box, is connected in the first gap, and S, a tiny resistor wire, is connected in the second gap.

    4)Through the cell, the clamped endpoints of the wire are connected to a key.

    5)The metallic in the midst of the two spaces is connected to a galvanometer.

    6)A jockey is connected to the galvanometer’s other end (Here, a jockey is a metal rod with a knife-like edge at one end, slides over the potentiometer wire to make an electrical connection). The jockey is slid over the meter bridge wire until it exhibits zero deflection on the galvanometer.
