Dimensional Formula of Electric Field

As electric field intensity is the force per unit coulomb, the dimensional formula for electric field intensity may be derived by combining the dimensions of force and charge. E=Fq, where E is the electric field strength, F is the force applied to the charge, and q is the charge. So, we’ll split the dimensions of force and charge to get a dimension of electric field intensity.

Because electric field intensity is a derived quantity, its dimension is derived from that of base SI units. The fundamental units are also known as S.I. base units. It is recommended to indicate the dimensions of length, time, and mass in a physical quantity even if their power is zero.

    A Brief Outline

The zone around a charged system in which it can exert force on some other charged particle is known as the electric field. Electric field lines are used to illustrate it. Electric lines of forces are another name for these lines.

    Important Concepts

The electric field lines are formed in such a way that the tangent at a place corresponds to the force direction at that point. The intensity of the electric field strength is related to the density of these lines. No two intersect because the force might have two different directions at that point if they did.

The dimensional formula of the electric field is specified as,

    M1 L1 I-1 T-3

    M = Mass, I = Current, L = Length, T = Time

Derivation of the Dimensional Formula of Electric Field

    Electric Field (E) = Force × [Charge]-1 – (1)

Meanwhile, electric charge = electric current × time

    ∴ The dimensional formula of electric charge = [I1 T1] – (2)

    Now, Force (F) = Mass × Acceleration = M × [LT-2]

    ∴ The dimensional formula of force = M1 L1 T-2 – (3)

On replacing equation (2) and (3) in equation (1),

    Electric Field = Force × [Charge]-1

    Or, E = [M1 L1 T-2] × [I1 T1]-1 = [M1 L1 T-3 I-1].

Thus, the Electric Field is dimensionally signified as [M1 L1 I-1 T-3].

Dimensional Formula of Electric Field FAQs

How does an electric field appear?

We may visualize an electric field by sketching electric lines of force, which show the electric field's magnitude, strength, and region of influence.

What is the electric field's direction?

When a unit positive charge is placed in an electric field, it begins to move in the direction of the electric field due to electrostatic force.

What is the definition of the Electric Field?

An electric field is a vector point that exists everywhere. It describes the force that acts on a charge in the presence of an electric field.
