    The naming system for ethers is very similar to the naming system for alcohols. The only difference is that the word “ether” is used in place of the word “alcohol.” The general formula for an ether is R-O-R’, where R and R’ are different alkyl groups.

    The simplest ether is methyl ether, CH 3 OCH 3 .

    The most common name for an ether is the name of the alkyl group followed by the word “ether.”

    IUPAC Nomenclature of Ethers

    The IUPAC name of an ether is derived from the alkane name of the hydrocarbon chain and the alkene name of the oxygen atom.

    The IUPAC name of an ether is derived from the alkane name of the hydrocarbon chain and the alkene name of the oxygen atom. In the example below, the ether has a hydrocarbon chain with the molecular formula C 4 H 10 and an oxygen atom with the molecular formula C 2 H 4 .

    The IUPAC name of the ether is ethoxyethane.
