    • What’s Next?

In the previous segment, we learnt about displacement and double displacement reaction. In this segment, we will learn about the effects of oxidation.

    What is Oxidation?

Oxidation is a process in which a substance gains oxygen during a reaction.

What are the Different effects of oxidation?

There are two main effects of oxidation: corrosion and rancidity.

    What is Corrosion?

      • Corrosion is the process in which deterioration of metal occurs as a result of chemical reactions with the surrounding environment. The surrounding environment could be water, moisture, or acid.
      • For example, rusting of Iron. Iron reacts with oxygen to produce Iron Oxide. Iron oxide is reddish-brown in colour and known as Rust.

    What is Rancidity?

    ??? + ??? → ??????

      • Rancidity is a process in which the oxygen molecules damage the natural structure of oils in such a way that it changes its odour, taste, and is undesirable for consumption.
      • To prevent the oily chips from going rancid, their packets are filled with Nitrogen Gas.
