    • Image Characteristics of a Plane Mirror
    • Summary
    • What’s Next?

In the previous segment, we learnt about Real and virtual images. In this segment, let us understand the image characteristics of a plane mirror.

What are the Image characteristics of a plane mirror?

The image properties of a plane mirror are as follows:

    1. The image formed by a plane mirror is virtual, that is, not real.
    2. The image formed by a plane mirror is always erect, that is, upright.
    3. The size of the object and the size of its image formed by a plane mirror are always the same.
    4. The image formed by a plane mirror is laterally inverted. That is, the left of the object is the right of the image and vice versa. Thus, the image formed by a plane mirror follows a Left- Right reversal.
    5. The object is at the same distance from the plane mirror as its image.

    Summary

Image Characteristics of a Plane Mirror
    • Virtual (not real)
    • Erect (upright)
    • Size of the object and its image are the same
    • Laterally inverted
    • Distance of the object and its image from the plane mirror are the same

    What’s next?

In our next segment of Class 10 Science, we will learn about the Ray diagrams of a plane mirror.
