National Farmers’ Day (Kisan Diwas) 2019 will be celebrated all over India on 23rd of December, Monday.
National Farmers’ Day is celebrated across the nation every year with the focus on the upliftment of the status of farmers. In Lucknow, a program was organised on this day which was addressed by Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He also unveiled a statue of Sri Chaudhary Charan Singh in Ghaziabad and addressed a public meeting and announced the allocation of Rs. 325 crore for the development of the city and rural areas.
Activist from various NGOs went among farmers and educated them about the welfare schemes of the central and state government.
A local tyre manufacturing company observed the day by setting up of ‘BKT Clinics’ in Mathura and Agra. These clinics will train farmers on the operation and the maintenance of tractors, how to increase the crop yield, improving its efficiency, soil preservation with limited use of fertilizers and preserving the bio-diversity by reducing the use of pesticides.
The Uttar Pradesh government observed this day by organizing various seminars, workshops, and discussions on the upliftment of farmer’s status in the state. The farmers were given information regarding various state government policies and on increasing crop yield by the use of scientific methods and use of new techniques in agriculture.
History of National Farmers’ Day (Kisan Diwas – Choudhary Charan Singh Jayanti)
National Farmers Day or Kisan Diwas is celebrated in the honor of Chaudhary Charan Singh who was the fifth Prime Minister of India. He served the country as Prime Minister for a very short tenure starting from 28th of July 1979 till 14th January 1980. He was a very simple-minded man and led an extremely simple life. During his tenure as the Prime Minister, he introduced many policies to improve the life of Indian farmers.
The magnetic personality of Chaudhary Charan Singh and various beneficial policies in the favor of farmers united all the farmers of India against the landlords and moneylenders. He followed the famous slogan ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’ given by the 2nd Prime Minister of India. Chaudhary Charan Singh was also a very successful writer and wrote down several books depicting his thoughts on farmers and their problems; he even came out with various solutions to improve the lives of farmers.
Chaudhary Charan belonged to the farmer’s family and thus he led an extremely simple life despite being the honorable Prime Minister of India. Chaudhary Charan Singh was the Jat icon and belonged to a peasant family. This was the reason he could relate himself with the issues of the farmers and therefore, he did the best to support them. When he became the Prime Minister of India in July 1979 he made many changes to improve the lives of the farmers. This is also an interesting fact that as the Prime Minister of India, Chaudhary Charan Singh never visited the Lok Sabha. The famous “Kishan Ghat” in New Delhi is dedicated to Chaudhary Charan Singh due to his involvement with the causes related to farmer’s communities in the North. He was an avid writer too and wrote down his thoughts on farmers and problems related to them along with the solutions. Chaudhary Charan Singh died on 29 May 1987.

The Government of Uttar Pradesh, India celebrates the National Farmer’s Day every year on 23rd of December as Kisan Samman Diwas. This is the birth date of one of the former Prime Ministers of India, Choudhary Charan Singh. He was highly compassionate towards farmer community and introduced several policies for benefitting farmers. Thus, Kisan Diwas or Kisan Samman Diwas or National Farmer’s day is observed on 23rd December. On this day the Uttar Pradesh government organizes many programs, seminars and discussions related to farmers of India and Divisional Agriculture Science at District and Block level, Uttar Pradesh.

All these are organized not only to commemorate the birthday of one of the former Indian Prime Ministers, but also to generate helpful and informed circumstances for farmers in the state.
Most of the states in India, especially those which are rich in agriculture such as Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and various other states are taking ideas from Uttar Pradesh for celebrating Kisan Diwas. The Population of Uttar Pradesh is the largest in India and most of the people are engaged in farming for their living. Farmers produce food and other eatables which are distributed across the nation; the urban population greatly depends upon the farming done by the farmers all over India. Thus, it is important that the government develop more productive conditions for the farmers all over India for healthier and richer cultivation.
Kisan Samman Diwas is one of the most important days for many states in India. The Agricultural department of the State Government and the representatives of farmers come together on the same platform to discuss the issues and solutions related to farmers. The day is also utilized to increase the awareness of the farmers about the advanced technology of farming.

Despite several policies are announced and technology been improved for the betterment of cultivation, agriculture in India is still in a poor state. Every year, the Indian farmers have to fight the natural crisis such as drought, flood, poor quality seeds, etc. Even though, for the last 10-15 years, farmers in India are getting a lot of relief from the government, such as receiving fair price for their production, rebate on loan, facility to use new technology for cultivation and many more; but there is yet a lot to be done to improve the conditions of the farmers and their farming practices, only then our country would be a developed country in the true sense.
