Genetics and Evolution | Mind Map

Evolution is a fascinating subject in biology that helps us understand how living things change over long periods. Biological evolution tells the story of life on Earth and how humans came to be. Concept maps about evolution help students learn effectively. A concept map about evolution shows how humans are connected to other life forms on Earth and the different stages of human development.

    What is Genetics?

Genetics studies genes to learn about them and how they work. Traits or characteristics come from our ancestors through these genes. For instance, kids often look like their parents because they inherit their genes. Genetics tries to understand which traits get passed on and how they move from one generation to the next.

Genes are made of DNA, a long molecule that gets copied and passed on to the next generation. Inside this big molecule, DNA has basic units arranged in a specific order. Just like the order of letters on a page carries a message, the sequence of these units carries genetic information. DNA uses a code, like a language, to talk to living things. This code helps organisms read and use the information in genes, guiding how a living thing grows and works.

    How does Genetics work?

Your genes act like a plan for your body and are found on chromosomes. Almost every cell has a copy of this plan stored in its nucleus, which is like a cell’s control center. Chromosomes are made of a chemical called DNA.

DNA looks like a twisted ladder. Genes are lined up along the sides like a series of instructions. These instructions tell the body how to make important molecules for growth and repair.

Each cell has duplicate genes, but it only uses some of them at a time. Unused genes are turned off. Sometimes, changes or mistakes can happen in genes. These changes can be random or passed down from parents. Changes in genes can lead to various health issues.

    What is Evolution?

Evolution is a biological idea suggesting that all living things on Earth come from earlier forms and changes happen over generations. It’s a basic concept in today’s biology.

The variety of life on Earth is amazing. Scientists have named and described over 2 million different species, and there could be between 10 million to 30 million more that we haven’t found yet. It’s not just the number of species that’s impressive, but also how different they are in size, shape, and where they live.

For example, there are tiny bacteria that are smaller than a grain of sand. Then there are huge trees like sequoias that can grow up to 300 feet tall and weigh thousands of tons. Some bacteria can live in super hot water, almost boiling, while others like fungi and algae can survive in freezing temperatures like those in Antarctica.

We also find unique creatures like giant tube worms near deep-sea vents and spiders and plants on high mountains like Mount Everest, which is over 19,000 feet above sea level.
