      Motion and Measurement

Chapter 10 Motion and Measurement of Distance

      NCERT TEXTUAL QUESTIONS

      1. Give two examples of each of the modes of transport used on land, water and air.

      A. Modes of transport

On land: bullock cart, bus, train, etc.

On water: boats, ships, motorised boats, etc.

On air: Aeroplane, jetplane, space crafts, etc.

      2. Fill in the blanks :

      1) One metre is 100 cm.

      2) Five kilometre is 5000m.

      3) Motion of a child on a swing is periodic motion.

      4) Motion of the needle of a sewing machine is periodic motion.

      5) Motion of a wheel of a bicycle is circular motion.

      3. Why can a pace or a footstep not be used as a standard unit of length ?

A.Pace or a footstep cannot be used as a standard unit of length because its length differs for each individual. So the measurement will be different for different people.

      4. Arrange the following lengths in their increasing magnitude 1 metre, 1 centimetre, 1 kilometre,
      1 millimetre.

      A.1 millimetre, 1 centimetre, 1 metre, 1 kilometre.

      5. The height of a person is 1.65 m. Express it into cm and mm ?

      A. Height of a person = 1.65 m

      In centimetre = 1.65 × 100 cm = 165 cm

      In millimetre = 165 × 10 mm

      = 1650 mm

      6. The distance between Radha’s home and her school is 3250 m. Express this distance in kilometre.

      A.Distance = 3250 m

Distance in kilometre = 3.25 km.

      7. While measuring length of a knitting needle, the reading of the scale at one end is 3.0 cm and at the other end is 33.1 cm. What is length of the needle ?

      A.Actual length is given by difference between two ends = 33.1 – 3.0 = 30.1 cm

      8. Write the similarities and differences between the motion of a bicycle and a ceiling fan that has been switched on.

A.Similarities : Wheel of a bicycle and ceiling fan (when on) both rotate such that their distance from a fixed point remains the same, which means that they both show circular motion.

Difference : Wheel of a bicycle shows circular motion as well as rectilinear motion, where as, fan shows only circular motion.

Wheel of a bicycle moves forward in same direction because of its rectilinear motion where as, fan remains at same point.

      9. Why could you not use an elastic measuring tape to measure distance ? What would be some of the problems you would meet in telling someone about a distance measured with an elastic tape ?

A.Elastic tape cannot be used to measure distance because it increases in length when stretched. While telling the measurement taken with an elastic tape, we have to tell whether the tape was stretched on taking measurement and how much. So, this is very difficult.

      10. Give two examples of periodic motion.

      A.1) Motion of a pendulum.

      2) Motion of a child on a swing.
