      Facts 1

      • A variable can take on a variety of numerical values, but a constant always has the same number.
      • A statement of a variable in which two expressions in the variable should have equal value is called an equation.
      • If the L.H.S. and R.H.S. of an equation are swapped, the equation remains unchanged.
      • A number is transposed when it is moved to the opposite side.
      • When we do the following, the equations stay unchanged:

      Facts 2

      • To both sides, add the same number.
      • Remove the equal amount from both sides.
      • Both sides should be multiplied by the same number.
      • Both sides should be divided by the same number.
      • The sign of a number changes when it is transposed from one side of an equation to the other.

      Variable

As we’ve just seen, the variable isn’t fixed, which means its numerical value varies. Letters of the alphabet such as l, m, n, p, q, r, s, u, v, x, y, and z are used to represent these variables. Expressions are produced when we perform operations on variables such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

      • The value of an expression is determined by the variable’s value. A monomial expression is one in which there is just one term in the expression.
      • When an expression has two terms, it is called a binomial expression.
      • When an expression has three terms, it is called a trinomial expression.
      • An expression with four terms is called a polynomial expression.

NOTE: There can be numerous terms in a polynomial expression, but none of them can have a negative exponent for any variable.
