CBSE Class 9 English Poem – The Lake Isle of Innisfree Summary
The poem begins with the poet describing a location called “Innisfree.” William Butler Yeats wants to live in a peaceful and beautiful environment. Innisfree, a place in Ireland where he spent a lot of his childhood, comes to his mind. He wants to return to that place since it is peaceful and full of nature.
He claims he would construct a simple and little cottage with nine bean rows and a honeybee hive. He will live alone in his house and enjoy the tranquility of nature. He wishes to live amid nature and is looking forward to getting away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
“I” refers to the poet in the poem. In the first stanza, he expresses his wish to visit Innisfree. With the help of clay, he will construct a small room. He’ll build the rooms’ walls out of little sticks. He plans to grow nine rows of beans near his house. He’ll also have beehives, from which he’ll be able to get fresh honey. He says that the buzzing sound of bees will fill his room and that he will dwell alone in peace and silence there.
The poet says in the second stanza that he feels at ease on the island of Innisfree. He will eventually feel peace encompass him. He also claims that when the clouds are covered in the morning, it seems as if the dawn has worn a cover. He’ll feel more at ease in this setting. He appreciates the cricket’s morning singing. The twinkling in the sky at midnight provides him great joy. He enjoys the view of the linnet birds soaring in the sky with their full wings in the evening and the purple glow of the sunlight in the afternoon.
The poet is determined about going to Innisfree in the final stanza. He declares that he will now get up and travel to Innisfree since he can hear the sounds of the lake water striking against the beach all the time, day or night, in his head. He feels the music deep inside his heart whether he stands in the city, on the road, or on the grey-colored pavement.
