Biosphere Reserve – Structure and Importance

Introduction of Biosphere Reserve

A biosphere reserve is an area of land and/or sea recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as being of special importance for the conservation of biological diversity. Therefore biosphere reserves are sites of scientific research, education and public engagement.

The reserve is composed of three zones:

    • The Core Zone is the most strictly protected area, where human activity is limited to research and monitoring.
    • The Buffer Zone is a transition area where human activity is managed to minimize its impact on the Core Zone.
    • The Transition Zone is the area where human activity is most intense.

The biosphere reserve is managed by a National Park Authority, which is responsible for the conservation of the area and the sustainable use of its natural resources.

Biosphere Reserve – Structure and Importance

The Following must be Considered for Designing a Biosphere Reserve

    1. A biosphere reserve should be large enough to encompass a variety of ecosystems and land uses.

    2. The reserve should managed for the long-term conservation of biodiversity.

    3. The reserve accessible to the public for education and recreation.

    4. The reserve used to study and research the ecology of the area.

    5. The reserve used to promote sustainable land use practices.

    Biosphere Structure

The biosphere is the global sum of all ecosystems. It is the thin layer of Earth where life exists and interacts with the physical environment. The biosphere divided into two main parts, the lithosphere and the atmosphere. The lithosphere is the solid outer layer of Earth, made up of the crust and also the mantle. The mantle is the layer of Earth below the crust. The atmosphere is the layer of Earth’s atmosphere that surrounds the planet. The biosphere also includes the hydrosphere, which is the water on, in, and also above Earth.

    Core Zone

The core zone is the innermost region of a star. It is the hottest and also the most dense region of a star. The core zone is where nuclear fusion reactions take place. These reactions convert hydrogen into helium, and further it also release energy.

    Buffer Zone

A buffer zone is an area of land separating two or more conflicting territorial claims. However the purpose of a buffer zone is to avoid armed conflict between the claimant states by creating a neutral territory. Buffer zones often established in disputed territories, such as the Gaza Strip and also the West Bank.

    Manipulation Zone

    • The manipulation zone is a tool that allows you to control the position and also movement of an element on the page.
    • You can use the manipulation zone to move and position elements on the page, and also to change their size and shape.

    Biosphere Reserves Importance

    • The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Programme is a global network of protected areas that aims to promote sustainable development. Biosphere reserves areas of terrestrial and coastal ecosystems that have set aside for the purpose of conservation and sustainable use. However the programme established in 1970, and there are currently 669 biosphere reserves in 120 countries.
    • Biosphere reserves are important for a number of reasons. Firstly, they provide a refuge for threatened species and ecosystems. Secondly, they promote sustainable use of natural resources and help to offset environmental degradation. Thirdly, they provide opportunities for research and education, and offer a model for sustainable development. In conclusion the biosphere reserves can also provide economic benefits to local communities through tourism and also sustainable use of natural resources.

Example of Preservation of Natural Inhabitants

    • The preservation of natural inhabitants is an important factor in the successful management of a park. Therefore by preserving the natural inhabitants, the park is able to maintain its ecological balance and provide a healthy environment for the animals and plants that live there.
    • An example of a park that does an excellent job of preserving its natural inhabitants is the Everglades National Park. The Everglades is home to a variety of animals, including alligators, crocodiles, and also includes panthers. Therefore the park also has a rich diversity of plant life, including mangroves and cypress trees.
    • The Everglades National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is one of the most popular parks in the United States.

    Biosphere Reserves in India

The Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has identified eight biosphere reserves in India.

The eight biosphere reserves in India are:

    • Eastern Ghats
    • Great Himalayan
    • Indo-Gangetic
    • Nilgiri
    • Pachmarhi
    • Sahyadri
    • Sunderbans
    • Western Ghats

    Importance of Biosphere Reserves

It is an area of land and/or sea that is set aside to protect and manage the natural resources within it. However the biosphere reserve is important because it helps to protect the environment and also the natural resources that found within it. The biosphere reserve also helps to promote sustainable development and encourages the use of environmentally friendly practices.
