Lip Anatomy
Lips – Anatomy: Lips are a protrusion of skin on the face that cover the teeth and surround the mouth. The lips are soft and sensitive, and they play a major role in facial expression. The upper lip is larger than the lower lip, and the lips are covered with a thin layer of skin and a small amount of hair. The lips are composed of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer and is made up of stratified squamous epithelium. The dermis is the middle layer and is made up of dense connective tissue. The hypodermis is the innermost layer and is made up of adipose tissue. The lips are supplied with blood by the superior and inferior labial arteries. The lips are innervated by the facial nerve.
Types of Lips
There are three types of lips: thin, average, and thick.
- Thin lips are defined by their small size and delicate appearance. They are often found on people with small facial features.
- Average lips are neither too thin nor too thick. They are typically in the middle of the spectrum in terms of size and appearance.
- Thick lips are characterized by their large size and full appearance. They are often found on people with larger facial features.
Vermilion Border of Lip
The vermilion border of lip is the red line that separates the pinkish lip skin from the white teeth. It is usually about 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide and is most visible when the lips are stretched. The border is caused by the natural pigmentation of the skin and is more visible in people with lighter skin.
Lip Infection Types
There are many types of lip infections, but the most common are cold sores and canker sores.
- Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus and are usually found on the outside of the lips. They are small, fluid-filled blisters that can be very painful.
- Canker sores are not caused by a virus, but by a type of bacteria. They are found on the inside of the lips and are usually small and round. They do not usually cause pain, but they can be very irritating.

The lips are a part of the face that are used to kiss, talk, and eat. The lips are made up of skin, muscle, and blood vessels. The lips are sensitive to touch and cold.
Lower Lip
The lower lip is the lowermost part of the human face, below the upper lip. It protrudes slightly, and is typically fleshy and full. The lower lip is the center of the lower face, and is used for many purposes, including eating, drinking, and speaking.
What are Lip Muscles?
The muscles of the lips are the orbicularis oris, the depressor anguli oris, and the risorius.
Inner Lining of Mouth
The inner lining of the mouth is a mucous membrane that lines the cheeks, roof of the mouth, and floor of the mouth. It contains numerous glands that secrete saliva, which moistens and lubricates the mouth. The inner lining of the mouth also contains taste buds, which allow us to taste food.
